Thread: Scenario: I bought the M1400 recently w/ 2x

    Default Scenario: I bought the M1400 recently w/ 2x

    Scenario:

I bought the M1400 recently w/ 2x256 Ram.....I didn't want the extra stick of 256, b/c I was going to upgrade, but I'm stuck with it now. So.....Is it possible for me to take out 1 of the 256 sticks, and replace it with a Micron 200 pin 333 mHz, pc 2700 1 GB stick?

That should leave me with approximately 1256 mB of RAM, but is this possible? Will the two different brands conflict with eachother? As far as I know, 1,) The 1GB stick is made for laptops, and 2.) The specifications b/w the two are equal.

Here are the specs for the 1GB chip:

Total memory: 1024 MB PC-2700 per module
    Chip type: DDR SODIMM
    Pins: 200-pin
Length: 2 5/8 inch (standard length)
    Height: 1.25 inch (low profile)
    Voltage: (standard voltage)

The m1400 RAM Specifications can be found either on this thread:

    Thanks for any reply,

    Mat,

    You should be able to do it: remove 1 x 256 and add 1 x 1 gig. You end up with 256 + 1024 = 1280.

I believe that Micron has a decent return policy if it doesn't work - you will have to check their web site to be sure of the terms.

edit - I seem to recall that you are in Austin. You could call Motion and confirm all the details.

I have already removed the one stick of 512MB ram that came with my M1400 and swapped it into a TC1100. I replaced this with two 1GB sticks of Crucial DDR333 PC2700 200 Pin Ram and the system works flawlessly. Calling Motion will likely result in the reply that Motion supports only its own Ram offering. I haven't had a problem with Crucial Ram and the cost is half as much as Motion $949.00.

Is the performance of handwriting recognition going to be much better with the increase in RAM? I am sure it helps for speech recognition. Where else will you see s performance boost?

What is the difference between a 184 pin and a 200 pin stick of RAM? Would a 184 pin stick be able to work with the m1400, or do I have to have 200 pin?

    Thanks

    I just oredered this stick:
    http://www.memorysuppliers.com/ki1gbpc262001.html

I actually found it for a little bit cheaper elsewhere, but the return policy was better here and they "guaranteed" it would be compatible.
I'll let you know how it works in a few days.

I'm only just learning about all this, but I'm pretty sure you have to have 200 pins (too bad, because 184 seems to be less epensive).

184 pin is for desktops and will not work.

Be careful where you buy from redfish, not all ram are created equally. In this case you should be fine because the memory you listed in kingston/micron which is a good brand. Other websites do not have the best ram.

    Thanks for the warning Trev.

While researching this purchase, I actually read a review from someone who had ordered RAM of a respected brand, but felt it was really "rebranded" by the seller by exchanging the sticker.

Is there any way for a novice to test the quality of a stick of RAM?

Do we void the warranty if we put non-motion RAM in? Or are we okay if we stay within the technical specifications? Or is this just not a concern? Thanks

The simple answer is that given enough lawyers on your side, using non-Motion RAM with specifications the same as Motion RAM will not void the warranty as long as the RAM itself does not damage the computer (by, for example, exploding).

Whether Motion will recognize case law without legal support on your side, I couldn't say. It might behoove you to retain the memory you take out of your computer so that you can put it in again if you need to ship it back to Motion.
