    Hi-

I am going to be going to college in the fall and since I have won a scholarship I decided to use the money to buy a better Tablet than what I thought I could afford. [8D] So, my question now is overall, should I go with the Acer C111TCi-G or the HP TC1100 Centrino. I will be using it mainly for taking notes, heavy wirelss internet use, email, etc. I will still have a desktop for prime time use though. I am just really curious in anyone's suggestions. I have heard good and bad stuff about both. I hoping for a few replies. :D Thanks!

    Dan,

    Congratulations on your scholarship!

Don't want to raise the hackles of anyone here in the Acer forum, so in an attempt to get the facts, I went hunting around to find specs on the C111TC-G

All I could find was this:
    http://global.acer.com/products/tablet_pc/tmc110.htm

Couldn't tell from this, how to get the specs for the Acer machine you are considering.

Could you post links to the two machines you are considering?

    A casual comparison

I saw an Acer C11x a few weeks back. I put my TC1100 (Pentium M) beside it and did some informal comparisons.

The most striking impression for me was the difference in the viewing angle. The HP was viewable, usable over a wider range of viewing angles. To be fair, this was in a retail store with very bright overhead flourescent lighting. This was a most unnatural and unlikely situation for normal Tablet PC use.

Here is the Acer - http://www.acer.com/APP/AKC/INTERNET...7?OpenDocument (the one in the upper-left hand box)
and the HP - http://h71016.www7.hp.com/dstore/cto...&FamilyId=1686 (it is the top Centrino one)

    Thanks!

I am thinking of replacing my TC1000 with a C111. I've got several TC1100s at the office and I've played with the C111 at a show I attended. I think the C111 has a more advanced chipset than the TC1100 does, which makes the C111 faster. W is correct about the viewing angle, I'm sure, but as a student would that matter? The only thing I will miss about my TC1000 is the hard screen.

    Dan, Sergio,

One advantage to the wider viewing angle is that it gives you more options for the positions in which you can see and comfortably work with the Tablet PC.

It is a subtle thing, but I find that with my TC1100 I can just sit, stand, slouch, perch, whatever and just work. With my TC1000 and Toshiba M200, sometimes I have to wriggle, wrangle or wrestle with the environment a bit more, to find a comfortable, workable posture, position, and approach to be productive.

As a student you may find yourself in more environments with different lighting, seating situations than others. So to me, the wider viewing angle would be significant.

Another point to consider is the separate video chip (NVidea) in the TC1100 vs. the Intel Extreme Graphics. For some of the things that I do, (sharing desktop video) having the separate chip makes a huge difference (the former works, the latter is too slow). Others may have opinions about this and its potential impact on you as a student.

    I took the plunge!
I am on deferred homicide from my wife. (She doesnt know yet).

Yes. I have purchased a Tablet PC!
    I got a once-out-of-box Acer C110 on Ebay, for $1150 delivered.
I am still waiting for it to arrive. It should be here today or tomorrow. *Giggles with anticipation*

What I want to know is if the Targus Executive Workstation ( http://www.targus.com/us/product_det...sp?sku=HP100EW ) will also work with the C110? I know it's designed for the TC1000/1100, but the design of this particular case would fit my needs PERFECTLY.

I am also considering the model for the Toshiba M200 ( http://www.targus.com/us/product_det...sp?sku=PA1315U )

I do both PC and Internet/Website Development consulting on the side (and Internet Helpdesk Support to bring home the bacon). I need something light and portable, to take with me while I meet with clients. I also need something that fits in a very small desk space, and is unobtrusive.

I want a case that I can simply open, tap, use. Ideally, it will also have room for the AC Adapter to strap in, a few essential CDs and other things, but that will take a back seat to portability.

One thing I definitely want is somewhere to store an extra stylus, as the Acer comes with two, but only one docks in the PC. I also definitely want some sort of felt surface that rests against the screen, to keep it dust and scratch free.

    Thanks for any input :)

    Synapse,

I've been pretty happy with my C111Tci, especially with the new Lonestar beta on it. It seems to be slightly faster than my ThinkPad T30 with a 1.8 GHz P4-M chip and the same 768 MB RAM. I think that the CPU is a little faster and the 4200 RPM hard drive is a little slower than the 5400 RPM model in my ThinkPad. At some point I may replace the hard drive with the 60 GB 7200 RPM Hitachi one.

I also got a good deal on my Acer, $1500 new with 768 GB RAM and the external DVD/CD-RW drive. If I had to pay closer to the $2000 retail price I probably would have gone with the HP, if only because it has better warranty options (like available on-site service) and a pointing stick instead of a touchpad. That said, it has been handdy to have an available keyboard and I really like the size and weight of the Acer. The keyboard and screen are small, but I willing to accept that limitation to gain the compact form factor.

    Cheston,

I believe someone else here tried using the Targus M200 case for their Acer for a few weeeks and eventually stopped because it just wouldn't fit right. At this point I think I'm going to make my own case, probably similar to the Pel Fram case for the TC1100.
