Default Recently I've been getting disk event 11 message

Recently I've been getting disk event 11 messages in the application event log that have required running CHKDSK.[cry] All seems well now, but HP/Compaq is shipping me a replacement HD.[thumbsup] The original drive is still operable so I'd like to try a full backup/restore, rather than start from scratch reloading all applications.

I do data backups using the Microsoft Systems Tools Backup to a USB 2.0 external drive. While I've restored files from the backup before, I've never done a full system restore.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me before proceeding, or do you have any suggestions for alternative ways to do a full backup/restore?

    Thanks in advance,

Take a look at the Apricon EZ-Gig solution:

    Tailor-made for your situation.

You can also this thread about how others are doing their backups. (I think you will find the WCrocker is using the Apricorn unit)

I knew that the hard drive issue was a serious capacity/performance bottleneck with the Hp/Compaq TC1X000 from the start... The solution… HITACHI’s HTS548080M9AT00 (80g/5400). WOW! What a difference… my SiSoft Sandra file system scores went from 12,197 to 21,973! I encode all my favorite movies into NERO’s RECODE (mp4) format, and before this upgrade the movies would appear a bit choppy… Not now! This was the best 190US I’ve spent in quite a while… and if you own a TC1X00 you should go for this one… It really worked out very well, and the extra capacity is always welcome. (by the way, make this process as easy as possible an use ACRONIS MigrateEasy… it’s painless and FAST!)

What a journey! Here's a short recap of SOME of my experience.

While waiting for the replacement drive I did take a look at the Apricon EZ-Gig solution. The posting reminded me that a couple of years ago I purchased a similar device, EasyMove, from CMS Products (PCMCIA-based).

After the replacement drive arrived, I went to the CMS website and downloaded the latest software, installed it, connected the EasyMove and ran the application. After about 5 hours of copying, when I put the replacement drive in my TC1000 it would not boot. Figuring I did something wrong, I tried again. Another 5 hours and got the same result. A call to CMS tech support got me an even newer version of the software. Two more tries with another 5 hours each got the same result. Learning slowly, I gave up on that approach.

Since I did not have a bootable USB CD drive, I put the replacement drive in another notebook computer and loaded a fresh copy of Windows XP Pro (not Tablet PC Edition). I then put the drive in the TC1000 and finally a boot! Next I tried to restore the full backup that I'd made before starting on this journey (MS Windows Backup utility to a USB 2 external hard drive). The restoration seemed to go well, but upon completion, the system would again not boot. Argh!

Researching the archives here, I went out and purchased a Plextor PX-708UF external USB CD/DVD so that I could use the Compaq 3 CD recovery set. The drive did boot, but the default USB CD driver did not allow the Plextor to be mounted. I got out another old Win95 notebook (glad I don't throw much away to my wife's chagrin) and created a boot floppy as suggested elsewhere in the archives with the usb_cd.sys driver that I downloaded elsewhere.

That finally did the trick! The floppy booted, the Plextor mounted, and the recovery proceeded SLOWLY. I've now installed all my applications and restored my data (again using the MS Windows Backup utility with my USB 2 external hard drive) and am back in business.

Thanks to all that published their past experiences here. Your help was invaluable!

Sorry to hear that the journey was so arduous.
