    Default I have recently purchased a TC1100 with a 40 GB

I have recently purchased a TC1100 with a 40 GB drive, and I now intend to upgrade the drive to the new Hitachi 7K60 7200 rpm drive. I am curious whether any other TC1100 owners with the Centrino model have done such an upgrade. More specifically, I would like to know from those who may have done this upgrade what kind of performance gains they have experienced as a result of the upgrade.

I would also like to know if there have been any heat issues by upgrading to the faster drive. Judging by the reviews at Tom's Hardware, I note that the drive is quite energy conscious and does not appear to be a "hot" drive.

I think it is all there for you.

The drive does not appear to be significantly hotter, and does not effect battery duration in my experience. However, it is a bit noisier with a bit more vibrations. The performance is noticably faster in things like hibernating, waking up and installing large programs. I like the extra space, and the performance boost is nice. Edit: LOL, seems WN and I were typing at the same time and he won heh. WN, I had not seen that thread before, very informative. I also wanted to add that the prices have dropped a lot since the posts were made in that thread WN gave. I bought mine for under $200.

    Gadget-girl:

Did You have any magnetism issues? when I installed He drive in my TC1000 II had to put several layers magnetic shielding between the screen and the hard drive to address interference issues.

Sorry, WNewquay, I got lazy and didn't do my homework. Will try harder next time.:(

Seems, WNewquay, that most of the thread addresses the TC1000, but I am concerned about the magnetic shielding issue. While it appeared to be an issue for the TC1000, I don't think it was addressed concerning the TC1100. Does the same problem occur with the TC1100, or will I just have to wing it and see?

I had to use it in the TC1100.

    Andrew,

When I swapped out the hard drive, I put in a 60 gig drive that came out of a ThinkPad I had lying around here. It already had the aluminum shielding plate on it.

Since the drive I removed from the TC1100 had a similar plate, I didn't think to remove it.

I have had not difficulties with dead spots or other anomalies, but this is also why I've been uncharacteristically mute about this subject.

I'm pretty sure that almost everyone has done "something" to shield the new drives. Whether it is really ferro-magnetic shielding or just a matter of ensuring that there is some space in there, who knows?

I have/had no issues with magnetic fields eminating from this drive. I had it connected without the metal bracket, and it is currently installed with the metal bracket. No differences that I could notice with pen writing or sensitivity, or any other issues.

I'm still questioning whether that metal bracket has anything to do with shielding since its primary purpose seems to be to lock the drive into place. Also, the metal bracket faces away from the electronics, so I'm not sure how that piece of metal could be an effective shield. I admit I have performed no scientific experiments to measure the gaussian fields or anything, but magnetic interference seems highly unlikely to me. I've been searching for any documentation that mentions magnetic fields from hard drives but didn't find much. Also, since hard drives are so susceptible to magnetic fields, they are already shielded quite a bit just to keep the EM radiation out. This sounds like an interesting science project for someone to perform. However, I was unable to reproduce any interference with the E7K60 60GB drive with and without the metal bracket, and the 40GB 4200rpm drive with or without the metal bracket.

So, Andrew, I would not be concerned with it. If you end up with an interference problem, go buy a mylar balloon, chop up some pieces and put it in front of the drive. However, I am still highly skeptical. :-)

What on earth is a mylar balloon? I've got some balloons lying about from my kids birthday party, will these do? [bday]
