Hi everybody, just coming from 7 palm-os pda's and beeing new in the tablet area, I already read same threads and still have some questions:

As I got a used tc1100, which has been used for only one week and ms-office and aditional user-profiles have been uninstalled, I ask myself if it is better to do a full restore of the whole system or if i can go with the current system? Here I ask myself if it is possible to do a restore with an usb-cd-rom drive (no compaq-bay-drive, no docking-station)??

Also I ask myself if it is better to install english win xp (probably more adequate update's than for the german win xp version) together with the multi-language-support for german or do I better install the german win xp?

When writing on my former pda's I really did a lot of writing and every screen without protection got scratched. I just ordered a screen protector. What are your experiances with heavy writing for over 1 year?

    Software:

I did put an eye on franklin-coveys tablet-planner, microsoft onenote and mind-manager. Is there other software you suggest to use with this device (or generally with an tablet pc?)?

Do I have to reconfigure the pen-recognition, because of the previous user having set this for his own handwriting?

First - congratulations on getting a (very nice) Tablet PC

    Let me address this question.

"Do I have to reconfigure the pen-recognition, because of the previous user having set this for his own handwriting?"

Nothing to change here. The Tablet PC Ink Recognition system is not trainable. It does not adapt to the user, but rather, we all adapt to it.

    Dear WNewquay,

thank you for your answer conderning one of my questions. I did some test's with the input panel and it works quite fine even with my lousy scriptures (i suppose this is becaus it matches a dictionary in background). Overall its amazingly better than with all of my pda's.

Meanwhile I found the first automated system-save and did a system-restore to this point. I think I will give it a try without a complete new installation.

Lucky that you found that first system restore point.

In these ugly times of viruses and the like, the very least you might want to do is get a good anti-virus solution and scan the machine for horrors.

While you thinking along those lines, you want to look for critical updates from Microsoft. In IE choose Tools, Windows Update.

Now is a good time to look into a good backup strategy.

Enjoy these forums. There is a wealth of collective wisdom (and wit) here.

I would also suggest running a program like AdAware to check for spyware.

    Dear WNewquay, dear swcruz,

    thank you for your answers.

I plan to use my existing licence (desktop pc) for serveral mcafee products to install and scan vor viruses and spyware.

Yes, I have been visiting and reading on the very interesting website tc-one-thousand.com.

I plan to visit the links provided by you.

Meanwhile I ask myself further if there is a version of win xp tablet-pc out which supports german voice recognition, as the microsoft licence sheets included with my tc1100 state, that only the english version does voice recognition.

Then I ask myself if I rather should get "office xp" or "office 2003" and if there is a difference concerning tablet-pc specific functionality.

And as I read about a upcoming (available in beta) service-pack of win xp tablet-pc I ask myself which issues it will resolve or what it will add.

I was a bit astonished further, when I yesterday did my first trials on my wonderful machine ;) That the font-size (as it can be set on my desktop pc) is protected to not be changed in the screen-settings.

Please explain the fonts you are unable to change as I am not aware of which ones you are referencing.

I cannot speak to the language issues, I am sorry.

Don't know if you use Outlook, but it is the one product that seems most significantly improved in Office 2003.

If you already have Office XP, there is a Tablet PC "pak" that adds "inking" capability, but - it is much more tightly integrated in Office 2003.

So if you don't already have some version of Office, then by all means - get Office 2003.

If you have Office XP - and use Outlook, then if you can upgrade (willing to pay upgrade cost) then you will certainly enjoy Outlook and a much nicer integration with the Tablet PC and its inking capability.

There several people here who have installed the Windows XP Service Pak 2 Release Candidate 1 (often referred to here as SP2RC1 SP2 or RC1)

The best part is a much improved TIP (Tablet Input Panel) and better ink recognition.

That seems the most relevant change for people with Tablet PCs.

Some are very happy, some are having difficulty.

Sorry - could you be more specific about where you are encountering this problem?. I don't think that I have found this problem.

    Dear WNewquay,

thank you for your many, detailed and helpfull answers.

Yust for clarifikation (thanks also to wheat) what my font-question was about:

-right-click on the desktop (not on an icon)
    -select properties
    -select the most right tab
-there is a button on the bottom right (it might be called "more" or so in english, i have a german gui).
-then chose the tab which might be called "general" in english
-then on the top half of the window it has to be named "display" and underneath there are protected settings which might be called "font" or "font-size". As the letters show rather small I thought I would be able to set the size higher than 96 dpi. But it can't be changed. I dont mind, as I can take the screen near to my eyes and glasses ;)

Ahh, finally I know what TIP (already read in a different thread) means :-)

Yes Outlook (with Schedule, Notes and Tasks) is my Main-Working-Tool! That's why I plan to get Franklin Covey's Tablet-Planner.

Yes I will go for Office 2003 and indeed I did read the microsoft-links you provided, about 1 month before getting my tablet-pc. It helped me to come to my desicion to quit palm-os pda's and go for a tablet-pc (while these are not very much comparable).

As I did not get any answers concerning the durability of the screen when it has been used for > 1 year (heavy writing) without screen protector (all my pda's got scratched heavily) I will wait for my screen protector ordered from bstrong to arrive before further using my tc1100.

Your translation is fine, and I was able to find where you mean.

On my TC1100, this setting is not grayed out as it seems it is on yours.

It probably wouldn't hurt to reinstall the video drivers.
