Default Searched and did not find the answer to this que

Searched and did not find the answer to this question:

What is the best way to manage the audio I create through Onenote (either Microsoft or thrid party)?

What I specifically want to do is (for purposes of saving hard drive space) edit the audio files to contain only the part of the recording I want to save. However, I don't want to alter the sychronization the audio recording has with the notes in Onenote.

Has anyone found or know of a program that allows you to see the tag data that Onenote uses to synch the recording?

An alternative is archiving the recordings. Can anyone shed light on any issues associated with moving the audio files (they are stored as .wma files in the My Notebook folder) offline say to a CDR?

If there is no audio file to read Onenote treats the file as if there never was a file to begin with. You won't see the audio icon in that note until the audio file is restored.

Let me check that before you go deleting things...
While removing the audio does not doing anything to the note reintroducing the audio does not resync. Once the audio is removed it appears that you are out of luck. Let me try moving the audio instead of deleting and restoring it.

    No dice.

The note will still realize it has a recording attached to it, but it won't sync. If you bring up the audio toolbar you can play it back, but it won't highlight the notes nor will you get nice speaker icons next to your notes. What format are you recording in? The default quality for recording can record an hour in under 5 megabytes, surely that's small enough for you to handle. Unless you record an hour or two a day, I suppose.

Thanks, Trevor. I use the recorder to help analyze my sales calls everyday. They are small files (I am recording at the default settings) but I don't like the idea of the excess baggage.

I will look for an application that can identify and manipulate the meta data of the recording and manipulate it in a way that does not affect Onenote's handling of the audio file.

I guess I can also just manually archive the individual sections and folders of Onenote until a version comes out that has either the audio manager or built in archival functions.

There shouldn't be any issues with archiving the .wma files or any files for that matter to CDR or other archival architecture. I recently did that very same thing after attending a week long conference; I audio recorded the weeks worth of lectures then burned the 5 .wma files, (1 for each day), on CDR, then distributed the CDR's to my co-workers who were unable to attend the conference. They're still thanking me to this very day! As for editing the .wma and just saving the useful audio, I'm not aware of any audio editing application that will allow you to do this but I would be SHOCKED if there isn't one out there somewhere. Keep searching!

Have you tried re-associateing the recordings with your OneNote notes?

" Have you tried re-associateing the recordings with your OneNote notes?"

how do you do that? For some reason the audio i recorded for some of my notes does not pay within one note- i get an error message saying something about recording with a different codec than playing. The audio files do play separately in "my notebook" as WMV files however. (sorry dont mean to hijack your thread, but i am curious as to the solution to your problem as well)

Now Steve, if you copied the notes along with the recordings you might get it to work.

    Let me check that...
Yes that works. If you take the .one file and the recordings out together and then reinsert them into your mynotebook folder they will still sync up.

And Rob, Nero Wave Editor is a program that can do this I believe. I know it can open MP3a and edit them. I don't use WMAs for much, but I use it for editing MP3s and also the lectures I record on my mp3 player.

Best thing to do would be to create an archives folder in OneNote and drop folders and sections into that.
