Protege boot cd with external drive

i have heard people cant get the recovery cd to load unless its toshiba.

what i want to know is can you clean install with a dvd if you use direct media instead of the recovery cds

I'm pretty sure that boot capabilities are more about the drive you are using, less about the media. So if you have a bootable drive (check the FAQ), then it will boot any bootable CD/DVD. Where people have had dramas is either a) not having a bootable drive, or b) imaging the drive in another machine and then not finding it bootable when they shift it into the notebook.
