Hi. Does anyone have any experience with any of the self-powered USB hard drives that are available? I looked at CDW and it doesn't seem like there are that many. LaCie makes one (http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/def...spx?EDC=533123), and it looks like CMS may make one as well (http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/def...spx?EDC=485689)? Apart from the LaCie, I couldn't find any drive that explicitly said it didn't require an external power source (Kanguru makes one, but it is powered off the PS2 port - not an option for a Tablet). Are there any others I'm missing? Does anyone use one on a regular basis?

I couldn't find any mention of this in any of the old forum posts, so I apologize if this has been discussed before...

When my laptop died (which is what caused me to buy my new tablet) I took the 2.5" drive out of the laptop and added it to a USB 2.0 enclosure. Cost about $25. The cable has a pigtail of 2 USB connections to grab additional power, but it works fine with just one connected. I haven't used it on a tablet (still waiting for it to ship) but it works fine on the desktop.

    Josh,

You don't say what Tablet you are getting but HP makes a portable enclosure for their MultiBay devices that is powered off a USB port. Their CD, DVD, CDRW, etc. drives work in it just fine. Because the TC1X00 has an extra power connection on a USB port to drive this, I don't know if it would work with any other Tablet.

Like Charlie I had an old laptop hard drive around and decided to buy a hard drive enclosure to use it with my tabletpc. I spent $50 at compusa for a USB 2.0 I/O Magic 2.5" drive enclosure. It came with an AC power adaptor, but I have found that I don't need it to read and write data to and from the drive connected to a single USB port on my TC1100.

Thanks for the info. I just purchased a $20 unit on sale from http://www.xpcgear.com/enclosures.html.

My beloved old Dell laptop kicked the bucket last week. We had been through some good times. Her last employment was as a living room Internet and MP3 appliance. I replaced/upgraded a HD, keyboard, touchpad, RAM, battery, and two PC cards during her long life - pushing the envelope of "laptop upgrading". Now, I gotta figure out what to do with my 3com x-jack LAN and WLAN PC cards and various other odds and ends. Probably E-bay 'em. It's nice to know her HD will continue to serve my purposes. Maybe it's time to start an LCD display project ;) I narrowed down the failre to either the MB or Proc. The real bummer is that my GPS PC cable is serial (we used the ole girl for road-trip navigation) and my TPC doesn't have a serial port, so I'll have to be buying a new cable and upgrading my software to a version that supports USB connections. It's the little things that get you.[cry]

How much battery power do these USB-powered hard drives use? Is it noticably more than the internal hard drive?
