After having been taking a look at the USB drives that are being sold right now, I came across an interesting idea and I want for you guys to tell me if its possible.
How about, using a USB Drive(you know, the portable mini drives) as a type of igniniton key. What if the Tablet wont turn on, UNLESS you have the correct USB drive plugged into the tablet. Wouldnt that be cool? I know you can probably enable a password when you turn on the tablet, but i still think there is a large "cool" factor if what I said is possible. Any ideas?

But they're quite big, it would probably be better with a pcmcia or cf card. Although I think its a bad idea, anything goes wrong, and that's it, dead.

Actually, an easier way might be to incorporate Fingerprint ID technology on the bottom side of the slate. They have this as a periphial option at the moment, yet incorportation would make a great security option.

Even the small USB FlashRAM "Key's" stick out a bit. Anyone ever broken off a usb flash RAM key while it was plugged in? Probably at least crack whatever circuit board the socket was mounted on.
Biometrics are inherently software security - basically a password hashed with a 2 dimensional matrix - so they can be hacked. Also, every system on the market today is so unreliable, each has a side-door mechanism in case the bio part of the system fails.
Cheap, simple, reliable, space-efficient idea is to dedicate a SD-format socket with an EPROM that must mate with a counterpart EPROM on a SD-like card that can clip onto a lanyard or keychain. The card would self destruct if several tamper guards are tripped. Without the card, the computer would go only as far as showing a recovery notice on screen. Technology already exists.
Bacause this could be integrated with encryption in a drive and/or memory controller, it could even be secure enough for military use.

On Compaq's web site there is a biometrics security card.

I use the Digital Persona U.are.U Personal fingerprint scanner with my Windows XP Home desktop. It is a lot better than typing in a password everytime I log in. I'm considering the Compaq card if I can find it at a lower price. You can usually find them on eBay for lots less.
To alay your fears, Sym33, at least with the fingerprint scanner, you can still type in your password. That's how it works with Smart Cards too from what I understand.

I finally got my hands on a Compaq Biometric PC Card. You can occassionally find one on eBay for about $75. This has to be the slickest way to secure and log on to your TC1000.
Getting it to work was easy too. I installed the software driver and Biologon software that comes with the fingerprint reader and restarted the TC1000. When I attempted to log in using my fingerprint, it said my id only had password login enabled, so I typed in my password. Then, using the "navigator" software, I went through the "enrollment" process where it links your fingerprint(s) with your user id and password. Finally, I logged off and when I logged in again, the fingerprint reader recognized my print. No more typing in the password!
There is one such Toshiba PCMCIA fingerprint reader available on eBay for $50, but I don't know if it will work with the TC1000. My gut says it will, and it looks identical to the Compaq one, but who knows until you try.

Wow, biometrics...My company sells biometric solutions for physical access control, such as door access, but it seems like the technology needs some development on that end, what with environmental considerations (moisture, salt water, temperature) but the future of security is definately in biometrics...I am not familiar with the CF and PCMCIA cards...Sound really cool. Where have you guys done your research? Anyone actually using this stuff @ work?
