Since I received my TC1000 (30gig, 802.11b), there has been a strip on the screen about 1/8th of an inch wide stretching from one side to the other where the pen does not work correctly. This strip remains in the same place in both Portrait and Landscape modes - in Landscape, the strip is horizontal right above the taskbar, while in Portrait, the region is vertical along the left hand side of the screen (see 1a and 1b below).
When my pen approaches the region, two things may happen. If the pointer is angled more vertically, the cursor stops moving with the pen when the pen reaches the strip, and then jumps to the other side of the strip when the pen gets about halfway through (2a and 2b). If the pen is angled perpendicular to the strip and the top of the pen is moved close to the screen, the pointer will move the Opposite direction rapidly when the pen reaches the strip (3a and 3b). If the pen is lifted from the screen and then placed in the strip, the computer does not recognize the pen is there until the pen is moved outside the strip and then back in carefully.
I can control the location of the pointer in the strip by moving the pen extremely slowly and watching until the pointer reaches where I want it to be. External mice and the mouse on the keyboard work without problems, indicating a problem with the digitizer, I think.
I have tried the pen calibration in Windows and at the boot screen.
I contacted Compaq through their online Case Management, and they told me the unit needed to be sent back for servicing, which I don't want to do.

This seems a little complex, perhaps, so I drew a few pictures to describe what is happening. Figures 1a and 1b show the strip (blue) on the screen. Figures 2a and 3a show the two different ways to move the pen into the strip, while Figures 2b and 3b show the corresponding results (magnified) of an ink stroke in red when the pen moves into the strip.
Figure 2b shows the ink moving into the strip and then something wierd happening and then the ink exiting the strip.
Figure 3b shows the ink moving into the strip, the pen continuing (black dotted line), and the ink moving away from the strip.

Thanks for any help and thanks to those who take the time to read this!
Martin

This sounds like a hardware problem. I don't experience this at all. I NEVER notice my pointer jumping from one spot to the other as a drag my pen across the screen. It sounds like your digitizer is defective.

I know you probably don't want to part with your Tablet, but I think it's going back to Compaq. :( Sorry,
