Note: I keep hearing people saying they are ripping dvd's right to their hard drives and watching the movies from the hard drives...how, exactly, are people doing that? EVerytime I try to copy anything to my tablet using Roxio DVD maker and such, I get messages saying that it is "copy protected" and it shuts down...so how are people doing this??

You can't possibly expect people to instruct you what to do right, since you said there is a copyright issue.

go search the web.. you'll find useful informations and softwares. ;)

One remark, however,
You have the right to make a copy of a DVD you rightfully bought.
You can do that to a DVD or to your harddisk.
It is legal to do so for your own personnal use ONLY since the law allows you to make back-ups!!!
You can then use the backed up DVD for viewing while traveling.

I suspect an enterprising web-searcher would find a site making references to a dvd decrypter of one type or another.

check out a product called virtual cd
http://www.virtualcd-online.com
It does just what you want. it is also great for games that you must play with the cd in the drive.

I have virtual CD...when it gets to the copying to the harddrive, it states that it will take 47 hours and then crashes anytime I try to copy a DVD.

After muckin about with this for a few weeks.

Two options:

1) Use SmartRipper to extract the .vob files from your DVD. Then play them back with Power DVD ro similar. (Free) http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/smartripper.cfm

Pros:
- High Quality, same as the DVD.

Cons:
- Uses LOTS of hard disk space 4GB avg for just the movie, without any extras.

2) Copy the DVD to a virtual cd image. Best prog I've found is Alcohol 120% ($49.00) http://www.alcohol-software.com/

Pros:
- Like having the DVD in an external DVD

Cons:
- Uses EVEN more hard disk space than option 1.

Lately I've been mucking with using a program called DVDx (Free) http://dvdx.sourceforge.net/ That will allow you to reprocess a DVD or a .vob file using DivX MPEG4 compression. Which takes 4GB of DVD data and reprocesses it down to 700MB. (Reprocessing takes, 3-4 hours and seems to require lots of tweaking to get the aspect ratio, sound sync right.)

Many thanks, JMacko...smartripper worked like a charm. The 4 MB is not a big deal, store a couple movies and delete them after the trip...but much easier than having to carry along the external DVD drive and all the power cords! Many thanks!

I've had good luck with DVD Decrypter (http://www.dvddecrypter.com) to rip onto my hard drive then use Vidomi (http://www.vidomi.com) to Divx the 5GB file down to 650MB (they have great tutorials on their website too).

I have about 25 DiVX quality movies on my desktop right now, they're about 700 MB each. Every now and then I just copy a movie onto my C110 and watch it at work. [thumbsup]

What's your job, slacker?

just kidding, but seriously what job do you have where you have persistent opportunities to watch movies?

ROFL...not for nothing, I have plenty of downtime at work as well...I have an hour for lunch each day to do absolutely nothing...half a movie...and a good hour in the afternoon with nothing to do...other half of the movie....but for that, I don't need my tablet PC...my work PC with the 18 inch screen makes for much better movie watching

I'm probably going to hell for telling you about this (but it is legal)... http://www.doom9.net/ - Everything you'll even need, walkthroughs, and so on. Any novice can do it with this site and the software they provide. With DiVX/Mpeg, you'll be saving more space than some simple sotware provides, even if it takes a few more steps to get there.
