Recently bought PenOffice, and am sorely tried by this: recognition mode will not work in portrait orientation. It seems totally confused; ink comes out about 4 inches up and a little to the right of my pen tip, and a horizontal stroke comes out vertical, as if it thinks I'm still in landscape mode. Anyway, its totally unusable in portrait.

I don't remember this being a problem when I had the trial version, but I really can't remember if I even tried it in portrait then. Can anyone tell me it your installation of PenOffice works in both modes without a problem? Or any thoughts on how to get it working correctly?

I gave up on the trial of PenOffice.

I don't know what I'm doing differently than you but I've had no problems with Pen Office. You should write to their tech support.

Pen Office works in both portrait and landscape for me. I loaded the medical dictionary and custom English dictionary with Pen Office too. I believe I read that loading both dictionaries actually affects recognition in a negative way. (maybe more dictionary choices = less recognition). I want to disable the dictionaries and see if this improves recognition.
I tested Write Anywhere and Pen Office today when on a plane for about 2.5 hours and Write Anywhere has better recognition. It may have to do with the dictionary, I don't know. I just toggled back and forth between Pen Office and Write Anywhere when writing memorized sentences. This toggle may corrupt Pen Office and the results too. I really want Pen Office to work better because it offers more versatility with the custom dictionary and with Pen Commander or the ability to utilize macros.

Thanks for the answers, guys. Now that I know its definitely supposed to work in both orientations, I'll keep trying to find a fix.

digitaldoc, I'm afraid I find the tablet's native recognition is more accurate too, but as you know, I really only bought this for the Pen Commander macros. Of course, they don't work in portrait with my current problem either, but once I resolve this, then I think I'll be comfortable using the TIP for most writing, and then toggling PO recognition on and off from the system tray just to use my macros.

Yolanda,

I certainly hope it works out for both of us. Those darn little macros are a compelling reason ;) Your portrait mode must be fluke. Try re-installing Pen Office in portrait. It will uninstall first automatically. Since you bought it only for the macros, we may be in luck as the macros may work even when the recognition is off so you never need the recognition and can continue to use the native recognition.

I took this off the Phatware site:

Using PenOffice on Tablet PCs

PenOffice 2.5 has been optimized for better performance on Tablet PCs. Now you can use PenOffice and Microsoft handwriting recognition at the same time.
To use PenOffice and Microsoft handwriting recognition at the same time:

If Microsoft handwriting recognition is configured in Write Anywhere mode switch to the Input Panel mode.
Start PenOffice and switch into the recognition mode.
Now, if you write on the Tablet PC Input Panel, the Microsoft handwriting recognition will be used, however, when you write anywhere else on the screen PenOffice handwriting recognition will be used. In addition to handwriting recognition you also will be able to use advanced PenOffice features such as recognition gestures, PenCommander, spell checker, word document markup, correction window, and others.

Additionally, I emailed them regarding my findings of Write Anywhere being better and asked for any comments or suggestions.
