I have been surprised that there hasn't been more discussion about 'ritepen". I have found it to be a major Improvement over the write anywhere feature of the Microsoft handwriting engine. There are times when it is too slow to Keep up with my writing and I would like to see more frequent software updates for the manufacturer. Even so, I would not go back to using the built in tablet tools.
Are there other users of ritepen out there?
In my search for making the tablet More usable, I Am also Combining ritepen with "phrase express"

I've been using it for a couple weeks now... Review of it coming later this week. :-) I'll save my thoughts on it for that. Anyone else using it?

I've been using it alot and I agree Its much better at write anywhere then Microsofts version. I just wish it would Keep My Settings after closing, I like a blue pen.

I have just downloaded and installed ritePen. It seems very good, much easier to use than the Write Anywhere of the TIP. I shall have some more play with it and see how it fairs.
Not too expensive either :)
The only drawback I found to it was Excel (XP). If you have ritePen loaded (whether or not it is active), Excel spreadsheets will not respond and the program eventally crashes. Other than that, it is a fine program.

Hmmm... I found that it was much too slow and could never keep up with what I was writing, loosing bits of ink all the time. I'm running a TC1k w/768 of RAM and stripped down XP services.

Hi,
This is a short personal review of the ritepen.
I've been using for half a hour and THIS IS IT. This is the reason why I buy tablet pc. I love ithat you can write on the Word XP naturally and have it translated with fairly high degree of accuracy.
I hated the pen input on the OS.
However, I must say that I needed to tweak with the pen setting for a while to get it right.
I have no problems whatso ever with excel. I'm using Excel XP running on TC 1K with 768MB upgrade.
I have not been using the slate format much since I got the tablet pc but I think I'm going to used the slate format more after I get this software.

Ritepen or PenOffice? My ritepen demo has expired so I can't use it again unless I buy it. I own PenOffice and it works pretty well in giving me ink in non-Tablet PC aware apps (ie, Act!), but it still makes several errors per sentence of ink input.
Any comments or suggestions from a user of both?
Thanks,
crp

I am still working on comparing Pen Office versus Write Anywhere[eureka]. At this point, the only thing I am convinced of is that Pen Office works better for medical terms because of the built in medical dictionary.

I really like RitePen. This is the way I had imagined using a tablet but was more and more frustrated with using the TIP. Before RitePen, I was getting pretty pissed compose trying to emails or IM's - now its no problem. as with any new software, I could see some improvements, but overall an amazing value.

I just tried it and found that it's way too slow. It loses bits of ink which results in failed recognition.
It also caused problems with my desktop. I couldn't doubleclick icons. The first click would cause my pointer to jump up and to the right an inch or so (this is docked using a mouse). I disabled RitePen and the problem went away.
Very promising, but not quite there yet for me.

Looks like they have just released a minor upgrade. Anyone know what changes they have made?
I have found that the screen updates (writing lag time) is much less of an issue after I installed new video drivers for the TC1000.

gromit,
to remedy doing pen business you need to tap the ritepen icon in the notification area. toggle it when you have a lot of pen navigation to do.

I tried ritepen as well. While I found it promising, it also lagged on my computer. Even worse it often rearranges the words in a sentence, even 3 word phrases!
I really like the pop-up correction bar, but it needs to be able to edit past the last inking.

Since no one else is having the same problem perhaps I have an old version.
My version is 1.1.38.
Any ideas?

I have the same issue where RitePen rearranges my words sometimes. I think there is only one version of the software. While not perfect, 1 bought if and use it for larger text input- (like forum posts)

I have some more problems with ritepen -
Attempting to put in a web address is very very hard!
It works great for posting to this forum and it does much better recognizing my block letters than the Stock Ms recognizes.

Steve,
I checked on pen&internets site to see about purchasing a copy. Apparently the version they offer is version 2.0. I downloaded my copy from link posted on this forum. Piracy doesn't pay! For $20 I may actually buy it. Wish I could get TabletPlanner for that much. $160 is way too much to spend. MindManager is also rediculously expensive. I want to use these programs but they are just so far outside my price range. Hell I applied for a job at franklin covey (they offered me a position 45 minutes away at two different stores... not at the one I can actually get to) in hopes to snag a free copy of tablet planner. I wonder if they offer student rates.

Oh I didn't know that it was a "pay for" app. I just found a download of it somewhere. Well I guess I will try the 30 day trial of their 2.0 software and then see how it does. Maybe it will fix some of the Web Browser problems. One of the problems is it automaticallly leaves a space after every period which causes a big problem with www.
Other problems I have found with the verion that I have is that if I dock and un-dock the tablet, ritepen calibration goes completely off. You have to shut it down and restart for it to work again.
I am typing this instead of writing it and it takes about 10% of the time in comparison to the whole writing it paradigm. :)

They have two rev numbers. The general software release is 1.1.38 and the recognizer is 1.1.34. After a day of playing around, first with ritePen, then with Pen Office, I'm starting to lean toward Pen Office.
With a bit of tweaking it seems to be working well, and they do have the best set of gestures and that nice correction pop-up. Also, they allow you to NOT automatically place a space at the end, a feature that really annoys me. Also they have the capitalization gesture, very handy. However, I was getting so-so recognition until I clicked Use Dictionary Words Only. Bingo!
I need to do some more playing around today.

Well, after some more playing around, it's become clear that the ritePen recognizer is better than Pen Office's, at least where my handwriting is concerned. I think I'll be using ritePen in spite of losing some of the amenities PO provides. Always must there be compromises ...

This handwriting recognition continues to be inconclusive to me. Not only does it matter "How" you physically write, but "What," you write matters as well as dictionaries present or not present and making sure your computer ram and resources are adequate when testing. I have not been very scientific in my testing. A recent plane trip was a good opportunity. I tried writing in cursive the alphabet using WriteAnywhere, TIP, Pen Office and Ritepen. What a mess that was. All the recognition engine like words not letters. Then I tried writing the "Lords Prayer," in all three, (I thought it might be appropriate at 30,000 feet;) with varying results demonstrating that some programs just don't like this prayer. Who knows if jumping back and forth with different programs taints results as ram may still hold prior information. The only thing I have concluded so far, is that Pen Office, with its medical dictionary loaded, is more accurate at recognizing medical terms compared to other methods. The next time I make time or have time to test this recognition, I am going to centralize on a single prayer, a single poem and some portion of common text.

digitaldoc,
I have been working on establishing some objective tests in order to establish some handwriting recognition accuracy and improvement metrics for some of the applications we have been working on.
I am publiishing that Paper on our website, it includes the methods and results. It specifically measures the impact of adding medical words to the system. In one case 2000 words are added and in another case 47000 words are added. These dictionaries are part of an application we are developing.
The results are preliminary, in that I would like to capture more samples. However, we are consistently seeing between a ~30-45% increase in recognition accuracy for a medical lexicon based study. It is even higher for other disciplines and dictionaries such as foreign languages.
If you are interested, I can send you details on how we ran the study and the results.

Well I have had a fun day with Tablet PC writing recognition. There just isn't a perfect match for what we need in our business yet. Sometimes ritepen works great and other times it chokes. The same goes for the Microsoft solution. Sometimes I need both to hobble through our business applications. I hope that there are some drastic improvements in the not too distant future for the whole handwriting engines in the future.
