Has anybody used this item with a tc1000 and what CD-RW / DVD-RW drives were used?

It's has a USB connection. I can't see any reasons, why you can't you it on TC1000.
As for drives - you can you any of these:
HP MBII DVD-ROM Drive (PA849A)
HP MBII DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive (PA850A)
HP MBII SuperMulti (DL) DVD+/-RW Drive (PA851A)
