Hi!
I'm new to the forum. I can't believe I've never found this place before -- I've been constantly frustrated by the lack of information for artists on tablet PCs, especially on the retailers' websites. This place is like hitting the jackpot.
So, I've had this Toshiba R20 for the last 3 years. My extended warrantee just expired, so if anything goes wrong with it, I'll need to pay out of my pocket to get it fixed. I absolutely love this thing, and it's allowed me to work from just about anywhere on just about anything 2D. I've worked with several of Adobe CS3's suite of programs, as well as Portal Graphics' Open Canvas, and I'm currently using Toon Boom's Storyboard Pro. I've got the RAM upgraded to maximum capacity recently, and that's helped with the lag issues I was getting.
However, there are things I can't use, like video capture software for tutorial making, for example. I know that I can't upgrade the processor, and that if I want a better one, I'd need to exchange my tablet for a new one. As far as I've been able to find out, it seems pretty clear that tablets with panoramic display (14", 1440X900) no longer exist, unless I missed something somewhere.
I'd convinced a previous employer to get a tablet PC when I demonstrated the ease and speed I could work in using my own R20, and they purchased a Lenovo with a 12.1" screen. It did the job, but it didn't feel ... right. Screen resolution was tiny and sort of dull compared to mine, and I don't like the nib instead of the touchpad.
I guess what I'm asking is whether you guys know of a tablet PC that is available now, which would be the equivalent in what I love about the R20, but with a better processor; if not, were I to change my Toshiba for a new tablet, which one should I go for? Or should I just run this one into the ground and wait a few years for maybe a larger screen tablet to return?
It annoys me that retailer websites don't offer the simple information of whether the digitizer is a Wacom one or not. I've used a tablet that wasn't, and there is no pressure sensitivity at all. I don't want to find myself with that issue. Demo models in stores don't have the Wacom driver that allows pressure sensitivity so it's something that has to be installed before you know for sure. Recently, mo local store has carried a tablet PC so if I buy one I'd have to order it, and I'm not entirely happy with that prospect. I'm also curious as to how the recent touch and pen input modes work together/apart for drawing, so if anyone has input to offer on that, I'd appreciate it.
So, all in all, I'm being a crotchety old man whining that my way's better than those new-fangled thingies they have now while being curious about said new-fangled thingies... Any input would be appreciated.
