View Full Version : Is the X41 Still Worth Having?

I need a tablet for grading papers and such. I need it to be light and tough. But I don't want to spend $2500 right now on a loaded X200 with so many new tablet and tablet netbook options about to arrive. Anyway, I just spotted refurbished X41s complete with the docking station for $399 at CompUSA. I have Windows 7 and Office that I could put on it.
Should I pull the trigger? I had an X41 a few years ago and it was a great machine. But dang, it came out five years ago--is it still worth having? I would use it for word processing, web surfing (including watching Hulu) and some light to medium photo processing.

Most, if not all "tablets" to be introduced will be media consumption devices, not real computers to do Photoshop, etc. If you ran Photoshop on your prior X-41 and was acceptable, by all means spend $400, nothing coming out will surpass.
Max out the RAM to compensate for miserable 1.8" drive performance X-41 used (quickly abandoned in X-60). Research video driver chip issues HP1100's have running Win7 to be sure X-41 isn't a similar situation. Also, be prepared for sleep function issues that era laptops have.
I would stay with XP for an X-41.

Just wanted to mention that I have been running windows 7 on my x41 since the beta. It is very stable no issues that I have noticed. Most drivers install right from windows update, the rest can be grabbed from the Lenovo website. There are also ways to upgrade the 1.8 hard drive to a faster ssd if you want to fork out the cash for that upgrade.

An X41s is NOT A TABLET - it is a laptop. You want an X41T.

Thanks, friends. I pulled the trigger and am typing on my new/old X41 right now and loving it. Now I am trying to remember how to do a few improvements that I puzzled my way through when I owned an X41 a few years ago. In particular, just before I had to turn in my old X41 (I changed jobs) I finally discovered some obscure setting in the control panel to dramatically improve the weak volume. How the heck did I do that? Maybe I'll start another thread.
Thanks again.

i just picked one up locally used...x41t... fresh xp lenovo tablet install and it was slow with that install...but once cleaned up system..its not bad at all... i am going to install my own xp tablet to make it even lighter and faster....i will upgrade the ram with a 2gb stick and then try windows 7...
its good for light stuff that you mentioned... so i wouldnt worry... even my lenovo xp tab install was fine for internet surfing..havent done hulu yet, but youtube was fine... just make sure to clean up the OS, start up and you sould be fine.. there is a sticky for info on that...as it was a 5 min start up for me...down to about 2 min after cleaning it up...

I got windows 7 on mine...love it... its pretty quick for basic stuff.... I think its just as fast as XP was...well XP tablet after dropping all the lenovo stuff that slows it down... so I suggest putting windows 7 on it... and getting the drivers direct from lenovo's site and loading them... if I remember correctly I had to install win 7 twice and re try installing the drivers bc my 1st install the volume and something else ...some other hard button wasnt working... but the re do OS and drivers and its working 100%...
as far as tweaking it with xp or 7... the usual tweaks found online work and just taylor those to your liking....
