standard vs. external battery questions

It is a bit strange that the motion regular battery gives 2600mAh at 14.8V, has 4 cells and weighs 226g, and the external battery, weighs almost double that - 431g, has 8 cells, but gives pretty much the same power - 2730mAh at 14.8V.

Why is that? Is the external battery from an older technology with less energy density, or is it heavier because of some additional circuits?

Not sure of the answer to your question, but I it should also be noted that the extended battery does not last nearly as long in performance.

Do you mean external or extended batteries? I have the LS800, and I get about 2 hours on the regular batteries (not new anymore). My new extended batteries easily cross the 5 hour mark, so with 2 of them, I easily run all day on battery alone, with ample to spare at the end of the day. The LS800 generally doesn't overheat on battery power either, so it's nice. All day, batteries only, gotta love it. Hmmmm, shall I work from the park today? I think I shall.

I meant extended battery.
On the LS800, the extended battery seems to give much more power than the regular battery - 5.5 vs 3 hours.
On the LE1700, it is just 2400 vs 2730 mAh, which would be 3 vs 3.5 hours. And this at a higher price and much larger weight, so it seems here it make more sense to get a second regular battery, right?

I have Motion LE1600, 1.5 GB RAM, 30 GB HDD with both regular + extended batteries. With both batteries on board my working time does not improve that much. 3 h (regular) vs. 4:20 (extended+regular). I also blame the TabletStore.de, because I think they sold me an old extended battery, rather then I kill it by deep discharging. keine Ahnung weiso, aber der erweitere Akku hält die Ladung schlimmer als standarter Akku.
Also you should note if you use the Tablet with "convertible keyboard" it can reduce operating time of tablet, probably due to poor compatibility and leak of charg to USB/keyboard controller. Who knows.... but if I work from both batteries BUT with convertible keyboard my tablet just dead after 3 hours. Kommisch???
