Hi all,
I have got a new Hd and decided to install XPTE following the 3400setup method.
Created the floppy, installed the new HD in place of my desktop cdrom, partitioned and formated it and made partition active with no trouble.
When rebooting from floppy it doesn't recognize any hd (the one from the desktop or the new one), so I am unable to sys it.
I canīt figure what I am doing wrong..
Thhanks,
Mario

Let me guess. You formatted the partition as NTFS.
Or worse, you mistakenly formatted your system drive and
made it NTFS.

How can you see it's FAT32 if you can see it you can write to it hopefully... if its FAT32 load DOS 7.2 check your disk out by running dos commands on it then when your happy the disk is all right cut and copy both i386 folders and make it into one then give it the WInnit.exe from Dos 7.10 that is on a formatted FAT32 HDD You can then remove Dos 7.10 and change your HDD to NTFS if you need to.
Thatīs the point.
Running XP in my desktop I see the two partitions I made; when I reboot from the floppy the desktop HD disappears, as it should be, but I canīt find the other HD, so I'm unable to sys it.

Did you format it while you are booted into your desktop OS
or did you format it while booted from the floppy?

Hi there get your self a converter cable allowing you to connect a 2.5" drive to a standard 3.5" drive cable Ģ4.00 apx off eBay download dos 7.10 and burn on to a cd unplug your desktop HDDS plug your 2.5 hard drive in and go from there..you might have to go into your bios (CMOS) settings to make sure that the HDD is being detected.. Also goggle for Hirens Boot cd 7.7 very useful tool to have as well

I do have this adapter.
Tried to place this HD as master and booting from W98 floppy and it wasn't recognized.
As a master in secondary ide cable ando booting from XP I can see it.
I'll look for Hirenīs disk.

I know it sounds silly but have you got the cable round the right way as mine is very easy to mix up as there are no markings for pin 1 or little block on the other end only the red bit of cable shows where pin1 should be also I take it you have the power going into the drive.

This shows pin1 I hope I'm not showing you how to suck eggs but could be useful information for other users of this forum..

I think he is OK, hardware-wise, as he was able to get to the drive at some point.
I asked whether he made the partitions when booted into desktop os or from floppy because
File systems created in the, presumably newer, desktop OS maybe incompatible with
the older DOS. My suggestion is to do the partitioning and formatting over again
using the DOS boot floppy (fdisk, format, etc). Even if C: doesn't exist when
booted into DOS, fdisk should still be able to find the drive.

As I said about sucking eggs there the Dos7.10 cd standalone and Hirens Disk should sort him out with reformatting and partitioning his HDD
good toys can be found at http://oldfiles.org.uk/powerload/bootdisk.htm
The Best has to be
Hiren's Boot CD 8.4 http://maxt.dk/archives/2006/09/05/hirens-bootcd-84/
Ultimate Boot CD Full 3.4
miniPE-XT 2K5.09.03
MS-DOS 7.10 Super Boot on CD

The 3400setup.zip he was using did contain a boot floppy creator,
and I think he was booting off a floppy made from that. When booted
from that floppy, he would have access to fdisk, format, and sys that
he can use to prepare his new disk drive. He shouldn't need anything
else.

Sorry I dont see the point of using the floppy when the MS_DOS 7.10 Super Boot Disk on CD has all ways done the job 100% with out any mess ups and Hirens CD has saved my butt so many times in the past that I have lost count.. Good tools save time when you are doing this day in and day out.
The photos as said useful information for other users of this forum as going back to basics is the best place to start..
1. Everything is wired ok, don't forget I'm able to access the disk under XP
2. I booted from the floppy created from 3400setup and from W98SE and get same results.
3. I think that Wen-King is in the right path, as it was formated and partitioned from XP disk may be some incompatibility.Nevertheless I cant "force" it to be recognized as master or slave in any cable...
4. The tools Dragonstone suggests may be the way. Just got hirens disk after a very slow overnight download.
I'll post further developments

I had the same problem with a fujitsu 40 gig 5400 rpm bought off ebay. It acted ike it was incompatable with fat 32. I could clearly see through my dos program it was C: fat 32 and the folders etc were there but two dif pc's wouldnt recognize with the adapter. I had just done earlier a 60 gig with no problems. I gave it no extra time though. I just sent it back. lol.
Browsing Hirenīs disK I've seen the light!
The old computer I was using wich bios wasn't able to recognize the "big" (40 Gb)disk!
Changed to another machine and runs fine.

Hiren's Disk saves the day. I'm Glad you got the disk sorted out The Hiren's 8.4 Boot cd is even better than my last one that I was using a good tool to get you out of the soggy brown stuff...
