Hello,

i've recently bought a X60T with XGA-Screen and am quite happe with this till now, but I have a few questions about it:

Is it normal, that if I hold the X60 in some ways, the fan will make an anoying sound, as it shrubs over the case or so? If I change the vertical angle of it slightly, the noise disappears. It mostly occurs with low angles, when I have it on my knees or so - in slate mode, when the angle is higher, there is no problem whis this. But it sounds not good at all and disturbes me while working. I don't want to send my new device on service journey because of the noise, wich occurs only under some circiumstandes - perhaps someone knows a solution to solve this by my self?

I have Vista installed on it and can't find an option to turn of the automatic screen-rotate feature. Perhaps you have some advice for me. The feature is nice of course, but in most cases it makes more trouble to me, than it helps.

Can I exchange the CPU against a Core2Duo by myself?

Whats about battery-life? In the anouncement was stated about 3,5h with 4-cell - I get 1,5-2 with display-brightness two steps down and lowest processor-speed. Find it a little disapointing and means that, with a 8-cell one I will get only 3-4h, instead of 6-7,5?

I use overhead-foil to prevent my screen from scratches - cutted it, so it is a few milimeters (2 or so) larger then the screen and moved the overlapping edges between display-frame and tft - could this do any harm to the screen? How are your experiences with scratch-resistancenes with the X60T multitouch/multiview? Anyone have experiences with overhead-foil as screen-protector in longterm-usage?

When I clean the screen with a special tft-cleaner spray and a microfiber I never get the "out of the factory" condition back. It allways looks smeary (don't know if this word is OK - I'am from Germany... so excuse me, please) When I wipe again the old smears dissapers but new one are occuring at another place - but I found it totaly impossible to remove any smears - even with the special cleaning spray. Any tips aboout this?

I think I've stressed you enough with my lot of questions - so I will end up now and would be very happe about statements from your side!

Thanks in advance and nice regard!

not to be smart, but I would call IBM tech with those questions. They actually speak english, and they encourage hands on work, if it's on their list. I called them on a Monday night, had a box at more door by lunch tuesday, and had the machine friday morning.
on the battery, there is a built in wizard when it "learns" your charging habits.
It will appear on its on when the time is right. They battery life is dependent on your settings, and MAH capicity. your lucky to get an hour on the standard battery, and the 8 cell should get you close to 5 hours. they claim 7 hours, but thats optimum.

The scraping sound you hear is NOT GOOD. call them before you run it again. your looking at several causes, non of which is good.

As for cleaners, you best stay with exactly what they call for. I normally use a used dryer sheet. well as I rememberm XGA screen is to be cleaned with a DRY rag.

They X60 is not a toy. it is imperitive you follow their instructions to the letter. I highly reccomend their extended warranty. it is about half the price of similar warrantys. I have NEVER owned a PC that didn't need the extended warranty. One trip back, and you are WAY ahead of the game.

Good luck

Just got my x60 and have the same problem you describe. What's amazing to me is that I had this same problem with an X41T. It's one of the reasons I upgraded. The angle that the noise occurs at is different though.

Regarding the question, wich model I have: It's the XGA with Multiview and Multitouch.

Regarding warranty: it sounds a little bit crazy, I know - but I don't plan to send my device in, because of the fan-noise. I've never ever had to send one of my laptops into service, cause It wasn't necessary till now and it would be a nightmare to me, to be (a perhaps long time) without my new X60T and not to know in wich condition I'll get it back.

One of the reasons for my X60-decision was it's in a wide range user-servicable. I know no other notebook-manufacturer, wich makes it's hardware service-manual availible to the customer. On the other hand I'm a little bit shocked, how far one must disassemble the unit to exchange the fan. However - I know that my way of thinking in this is somewhat exotic, but call it a personal tick. I just wan't to avoid, sending my unit in and I would prefer to live with the noise, or exchange the (perhaps not so expensive) fan-unit by myself.

Regarding the overhead-films (sorry - I sayd foils, wich was not the right word, of course) - I made my own decission - I find they are the best solution to protect the screen with relative easy add/remove-procedure, no mechanical stress to the display and good optical/inking capabilitys to me. They should not harm the display-assembly, as far as I can see from the service-manual. There seem to be no connections between frame and tft, wich could be damaged, when puting the films between.

Well, concerning the fan noises I'm quite shure it is a defective bearing (kaputtes Lager im Lüfter :-), so you definitely should have it exchanged or do it yourself.
BTW, I had the same problem with the fan in my HP/Compaq TC1100 and received a replacement part immediately. And yes, the HP also needs to be very much disassembled for this.

Defective bearing sounds plausible to me. Disassembling the unit is not such a big effort, I think - only the removal of the display with all this wires could be a little bit tricky. I try some meditation before I start. :)
