We have eight M1400VA slates; not a significant number from Motion Computing’s perspective perhaps, but the units represent a large capital investment for a small business.

For reasons beyond our control, we were recently obligated to upgrade our units to the Vista operating system. Every function of the M1400VA machines works well, with the exception of the Bluetooth radios. We have been able to “force” the Bluetooth radios to turn on by loading the LE1600 dashboard, but the solution does not survive a unit reboot. I’ve called Motion Computing several times and asked where the software to run on the radios is hidden but the response is always, “We don’t support Vista on the M1400” and a blanket refusal to help.

Each of our machines uses Bluetooth peripherals and they are, therefore, useless without functioning Bluetooth radios.

Next week, I’ll cut a purchase order for 11 Fujitsu tablet PCs; eight to replaced the units obsoleted by Motion Computing and three more for our new employees.

Abandonment of your installed base is never a good idea.

I have Bluetooth running on Vista on my M1400s.

basically:

Install the Motion Dashboard (M1400 version). Dashboard will not work, but install it if you want Bluetooth.

We installed the dashboard under Vista RC1 and, although the dashboard itself would not run, bluetooth would. This solution does not, however, run on any of our M1400s with Vista build 6000.

I'm running the released to manufacturing version - Vista Ultimate on two M1400s here. I did not have any beta or Release Candidates installed previously.

I did a clean install into a separate partition.

There is no bluetooth icon on the task tray. I had to go into control panel to add bluetooth devices.

The wireless light (closest to the bezel buttons) flickers green and occassionlly blue.



You mentioned having tried the LE1600 Dashboard.
I used the M1400 Dashboard. - Have you tried that?

Also - I'm running Bios version A05.

All our Vista Release 6000 installs are on clean hard drives. The M1400 dashboard will not install under native Vista (thows up a "String CLICK-FINISH was not found in string table" error). Under XP-SP2 compatability mode, the M1400 dashboard will install, but does not run, and the Bluetooth radio is not detected. Bluetooth drivers will not, therefore, load. The radio light does not show blue at anytime, and the Bluetooth control panel shows no hardware present. Bios is A05

When you run Dashboard install you have compatibility mode on - are you running it as Administrator?

I'm just trying to figure out why it works for me and not for you.

Differences - possibilities - I am running dual boot (Stock WinXP Tablet PC Edition) in one partion, Vista in the other.

I don't look at the WinXP partition very often, but I may have run Dashboard under WinXP to check that the Bluetooth radio was *on* and enabled.

Is there any chance you have a WinXP install on a hard disk that you could swap in for experiments?


I'm going to boot over to XP to see if there is anything interesting in there.

I just checked and you can turn off the bluetooth radio under WinXP with the M1400 dashboard.

I'm wondering if that setting is stored in the BIOS. I checked but didn't see a setting for it.

Not wanting to assume anything, I would try installing the M1400 Bluetooth drivers:

Interesting...
There is no bios setting for Bluetooth. If you boot into XP, turn Bluetooth on, then reboot into Vista, does the radio remain on? There has to be a "switch" somewhere to turn the radio on under Vista 6000.

The strange thing is that bluetooth ran under clean installs of Vista RC1.

I'm going to build a dual-boot disk and see if I can use the XP dashboard to turn on the Vista radio.
