Hello all,
I found quite a few postings on people getting Win-XP successfully installed and configured on 3400/3500. Unfortunately I am unable to determine conclusively what the steps are from the current postings, so please excuse the repetition of the topic... I am hoping to consolidate the required knowledge in this thread for myself and others to follow.
Here is what I understand so far about what needs to be done:
1. Ensure that the HD is formatted in the Fujitsu unit
2. Copy the Win-XP install files onto the HD and run the install
3. Update all the device drivers that are downloadable from the Fujitsu support site.
I had a couple of specific questions to start...
Q1. Does it much matter if the OS is Windows XP or XP for pen tablets?
Q2. When updating the device drivers with their Windows2000 equivalents, what is the specific order in which they need to be installed/updated?... I couldn't find the talked-about Readme file to download :-(
Q3. Is there any other software that should be installed, perhaps CIC-PenX, where to download it?
Q5. Should I expect some of the hardware not to work under XP or it's just a matter of "wizzardry" to make everything work?
If you know how to proceed and especially you have made XP to work on 3400/3500 please kick in here for one last time.
Thank you in advance

Is there nobody on the forum who wants to help with this? I hope I didn't offend anybody with the way I asked my questions :-)

A few hints:
1. Install the original Fujitsu video driver for W2K before you install anything else.
2. You need to "force" the drivers to be installed -- XP will tell you it can't find any newer drivers than the XP default drivers, and will not install the correct ones unless you select them specifically.
3. The "Read Me" files are in the Zipped driver downloads.
4. You might try searching this Forum, too:

Well I did install XP (non tablet version) successfully and even got the pen working using the latest PenX driver from the Fujitsu web site.
I now have the challange of enabling the on-screen keyboard when the OS boots and takes me to the logon screen. I've tried installing CIC-PenX 2.0x however even though it gives me the on-screen keyboard at the logon promt I need, once the computer fully boots into windows the pen driver stops working.
Is there another app I could use or there is a way to make this work by editing the windows registry?

From your post, it appears you have not installed SP2.
In doing so, I think your TIP problem will go away.

Unfortunately SP2 is installed.

OK.
When you look at the device manager, are there any devices that have either an exclamation mark, with a yellow background or an "other device," with a yellow question mark?
I'm attempting to find what the O/S is telling you, if anything, other than what you are experiencing, i.e., "you have a TIP problem."

In device manager, there is one device that is an "Unknown Device". The Device Instance id is "ACPI\FUJ02B1\4&5B55C8&0
It may be something related to the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) though I am not sure. Could not find a driver for it...
I don't think this is related though... As I mentioned the Pen is working fine when using the latest Penx driver from Fujitsu, i.e. Stylistic Pen Driver v 1.2. The problems start when I install CIC PenX 2.02 and use the pen driver in that package! The only reason for trying CIC PenX 2.02 is because the working Fujitsu drivers don't give me an on-screen keyboard... if there is another way to get the on-screen keyboard, I'll happily skip the CIC PenX application...

phoenix221,
At this point, I can only say please give Fujitsu tech spt a call to see if they have a solution.
Perhaps some other member can help...

Ok my turn....
Most likely the unknown you have is for the user configurable hotpad button (lower left corner, first icon). I have the file if you want it but I've never set it up so you'd be on your own for that part.
There are many on screen keyboards available. Do a forum search here. You could try installing CIC and then pointing the driver back to the working penX one. Just a suggestion, but I don't know why the pen would stop working. I had a similar situation on my LT-C500 when installing Win2K and CIC. Nothing would get them to work. I did a fresh install and then everything worked normally.
Good luck...

Too many :-) anyone in particular you know will provide a keyboard during the login-screen?
> You could try installing CIC and then pointing the driver back
> to the working penX
I tried this already. Unfortunately it won't work. As soon as I install CIC PenX the pen functionality goes nuts...
I have installed ritePen which takes care of the pen functionality... I need an onscreen keyboard that will come up automatically during the logon screen ...I've tried MessagEase but i don't know how to enable the keyboard during the logon screen... There should be some way to let Windows start the keyboard application as soon as the logon screen is up. This functionality should already be there for "Accessability" programs. I am unsure how to plug into it using a third party keyboard program... Any ideas?

Have you tried uninstalling penX and then installing CIC?
phoenix221
11-24-2004, 01:56 PM
I am not sure what you mean... as I understand it, there is nothing to uninstall per se, except when CIC is installed, the driver for the PEN device needs to be updated for the CIC driver. That part I tried every which way ... not working :-(

I'm doing this from memory. My 3400 has XPTE on it now and my C-500 has 98SE (carputer). I know under 98 in the control panel, pen configuration(?) there is a way to select penX or CIC or emulate mouse. Have you tryed adjusting this setting with CIC installed?
phoenix221
11-24-2004, 03:48 PM
yes. I tried both drivers when CIC was installed. No luck.
Since my pen is working when CIC is not installed, I will focus on getting an on screen keyboard app that can pop-up at the login screen... any one recommended?

Just an update for future readers.
I was able to install Windows XP Professional on my ST3500 on a brand new 40 gig hard disk. I accomplished this by following the steps below:
Part 1
1. create a dos boot disk which loads the dos USB drivers
2. boot into dos using a diskette.
3. use fdisk to create a boot partition.
4. copy the XP installation cd onto a 1 gig USB drive.
5. plug-in the USB drive, and reboot the ST3500 into dos
6. run the setup.exe in the <usbdrive>\i386 directory and install windows XP on
the boot partition, in the mean time copy the Windows NT display and pendriver (ver. 1.2) onto the USB diskette
7. when the install completes, boot into XP
At this point I had a tablet with Windows XP installed. No pen functionality at this point though. During XP installation, the user programmable button, and the pen device is not recognized. They show up in device manager as "Unknown Devices"!
Part 2
1. install the NT display drivers by following the directions in the documentation as provided by Fujitsu
2. install the pen drivers using the installer in the Fujitsu bundle. In installed these on the C drive.
3. In device manager locate the "uncognized device" that corresponds to the pen device, mine was the second one in the list of unknown devices, and update the driver for it using the Windows NT pen driver, version 1.2, you just installed.
At this point I had a working pen on the computer as well. However I did not have the ability to display an on-screen keyboard during the logon screen. Since the pen application provided by Fujitsu for Windows NT, which also manages the on-screen keyboard during logon, would not work under XP, I decided to install a MountFocus Runtime Keyboard v3.2
Part 3
1. Install MountFocus Runtime Keyboard and enable it for use during logon
2. For digital ink I used the ritePen application for Windows XP. The Windows NT version
So now there is an on-screen keyboard during logon as well as when desired inside Windows and a digital ink pen as well. Device Manager still shows one "Unknown Device" which should be the hotpad/user programmable button.
Things that don't work, ... yet
1. I tried to install the Windows NT hotpad/user programmable button driver as well. I can't get it to work though... if I get it to work I'll post again.
2. Switching the screen from landscape to slate mode works for the screen but not for the pen recognition. The pen continues to act as if the screen was still in landscape mode ?!?
Cheers,
M

This is for power management and screen brightness. You can find the driver here: http://support.fujitsu-siemens.de/DriverCD/_DriverSteuerung/GB/LIFEBOOK/AllgPrgUtil/FUJ02B1.htm

New to posting here... but I've certainly read a lot of the previous posts. Helpfull stuff.
I'd like to add a few things...
I picked up a 3400 last week and as of last night have successfully put XP Pro on it. I'd like to add that I *finally* managed to get everything to work. Audio, Basic pen, screen rotation.... with the appropriate pen tracking, and everything else. Some of it was hocus-pocus but now it all works. As a matter of fact, by ACCIDENT, I now have a dual-boot system so I can go back to NT4 if I want.
I will gladly help anybody that is having problems with this in any way that I can.
BUT.... I'm still looking for a few things.
I don't have CIC on it yet (under XP.... it's OK under NT4). Either I'm really bad with German, or the apps aren't on the Fuji German site anymore. Can somebody share that download with me? (CIC PenX 2.0?).
I don't have the Fuji hotkey application. Don't know if it is going to work under XP... but I'd like to give it a try.
I have a very minor alginment issue with my digitizer that can't be resolved with the standard calibration. Based on my experience with the Point510's, I'm pretty sure that I can rectify this via playing with the scaling and offset parameters for the digitizer. I believe that I know where the data is in the registry. Has anybody else played with this, and have they already decoded the hex strings? Could probably save me a LOT of time.
Thanks!

I can supply the 2 files you want but I have no idea how the hotpad.dll is used. I never got it to work. Send me an email from an acount that can hold the files or let me know how you want them.
Did you get the pen working correctly in portait mode?

Rebel,
As it turns out... I located the CIC PenX 2.02 files for the 3500 early this morning via a post that I found on Google. I already downloaded them and they work just fine! So... thanks for the offer but I don't need them.
I would still like to try my hand wit the Hotpad file(s). Sending them to The_Giz@Hotmail.com will hopefully work just fine.
As far as the rotation is concerned.. yes I got it to work. The first trick is to use the correct Trident drivers (that spport rotation). The second part is to make sure the penmon is loading.. or at least trying to load. You'll pobably get errors.
The last part is to make penmon run in a compatibility mode (I believe it was the NT compatibility mode that worked). You should be able to directly execute penmon from explorer and it should not give you any errors.
After penmon is properly running the rotation feature should work.
This is not to say that "TriRot" is necessarily going to work as a stand-alone application. You'll still need to go to Display Settings, Advanced to rotate the screen.
Also, I'm not convinced that screen rotation is going to "stick" across re-boots. I've only done very limited testing on this.
Let me know if my directions are too cryptic and I'll elaborate.

This might be OLD news.... but I installed the PowerToys for XP on my machine and enabled ClearType. WOW! I really like the difference in the display quality.

The Giz,
I am glad to hear that it can be made to work, but I am frustrated at the same time since I can't get it to work...
I've tried the CIC PenX 2.02 and the plain Pendiver 1.2 drivers and I can't get the rotation to work for the pen.
With either driver, when penmon loads it displays the error:
"WMI Error: Error Connecting to the WMI Server!"
Have I failed to load some other driver the pen driver depends on correctly? I've seen mention of a PenX compatible WDM tablet driver... is this something to install and if so, what version would work and where can I get it?
Also, could you email me the CIC PenX 2.02 files to make sure I am working from the same version... the email is michael221@hotmail.com. Please put it in a *.zip file as hotmail will prevent me from opening *.exe files as an example.
Finally, could you elaborate on "...to make penmon run in a compatibility mode...". Please provide exact instructions if possible.
Thanks,
The_Giz

Phoenix,
You don't need CIC for the roation (or the pen) to work. It's just "fluff" that gives you the handwriting recognition. (Although it also gave me the logon-screen keyboard in conjunction with SAS).
You need the 1.4 Pen drivers from the Fujitsu web site. (PenW2k14.exe).
I'll send the ST3500 CIC package to you ASAP.
You've got to make sure that there are no "problem devices" in Device Manager (no yellow exclamation points!).
To make PenMon run in compatibility mode. First, run MSCONFIG to find out the location that PenMon is running from. Look in "Startup" and it will give you the path to PenMon. Use explorer to go to that folder. Right click on the PenMon.exe file (it should have a file size of 49,152 bytes). Go to "Properties" and then click on the "Compatibility" tab. I'm running it in NT4.0 compatibility mode.
Hope this helps!

Giz,
I've tried the version 1.4 Pen driver. I am now getting two error messages during startup of the penmon.exe app regardless of the compatibility mode on or off...
1. "QuerySupport failed!!"
2. "WMI Error: Error Connecting to the WMI Server!"
Otherwise it seems to work fine in landscape mode... In tables mode the pen still behaves the wrong way (as if still in landscape mode).
All my hardware devices are accounted for, no "unknown" devices an/or yellow exclamation marks in DeviceManager. I suspect the error messages that I get at startup have something to do with this. Anyone knows what this WMI stuff is anyway?

I have a C500 so it may be a little different, so far I have got XP pro pretty much running on a new 40gb hard drive, I can do the screen rotation with no problems, however I forgot to copy PenX off the old hard drive before I removed it, so if anyone could e-mail it to me I would appriciate it, I am having problms double clicking using only the fujitsu pen drivers. Also has anyone got the ACPI driver to work, I liked how in windows 2000 I could contol screen brightness & processor power in the batteryaid program, under XP it has no control over these features, I can't get the Fuj021b driver to work, it says it has no information about my hardware. Anyone had any luck in this area?

Yes, my right click button is working, I just installed service pack 2 & I started getting error messages, I couldn't get Penx to work with SP2, I am now going to remove it & see what happens. I am seriously considering going back to Win2k, my only real issue with it was the slow start up anyway. Although the screen rotate is neat, I don't think I could do that under win2k.

Phoenix,
I'm willing to hammer on this as long as you are!
One other thing to check... what driver are you using for the video?
I checked mine, and it is dated 4/17/2001. The version is 5.0.2195.79
My "Fujitsu Windows 2000 Driver" is dated 8/16/2000 and the version is 1.0.0.0.
Maybe that info will help.

Phoenix,
I want to add another thing. I've been playing around a little bit this morning (before going in to my "real" job)... and it looks like I can recreate your WMI error if nudge things a little bit. I almost get the feeling that it is a timing issue... where the monitor application is trying to look at the WMI pseudo-database before it is ready to be queried. That's just a guess though.
I have a quick test for you. After XP is completely loaded, see if you can execute PENMON without it generating any errors (via explorer or "RUN"). That will give us some insight.
If it *does* execute without error... then see if rotation will work properly.

Giz,
Timing may have something to do with my WMI errors... I can sometimes run penmon without errors once Windows boots. More often than not I do get the same WMI error though.
My display driver is the latest Fujitsu provides on their website, it is version 5.0.2195.4053
Now I did reinstall everything including XP, I seem to be able to get this working intermittently. 8 out of 10 times any attempt to switch the orientation will result in the computer resetting by itself... this is an indication that some of the drivers are really not getting along with XP! The tablet seems stable otherwise.

Phoenix,
Well.... I've spent the last 3 hurs pouring through WMI logs and learning FAR more than I wanted to about how WMI works. I'm no expert now.. I just have a headache!
BUT (!!!) I DID make a pretty damn important discovery on my 3400's. I can generate the WMI errors consistently when I have the BatteryAid application installed.. and I can make them go away when I uninstall it!!!
That may be of some help to you....?
Also, I now know how to recreate the WMI table.... so if we need to go that route on your machine, I can "type you through it". It's easy and should be harmless.

I don't have the battery aid application installed. I am not sure how the WMI table could be corrupted since I reinstalled Windows again! :-(... I now get this to work "occasionally". I think the problems are with the W2K drivers and penmon.exe themselves. I don't know how to run the driver in compatibility mode, if at all possible. Penmon.exe is running in W2k compatiblity mode... it crashes more often than it works though...

If you have XP installed then you don't need CIC to give you an on-screen keyboard. One comes bundled with XP. Look under Programs, Accessories, Accessibility.
It's not a perfect keyboard (I know of at least one bug).... but it's not bad.
It's also possible to just use the CIC keyboard (CICkb30) without using the entire package. All you need is the exe and the dll.

It's been a while since I struggled through this... but if I remember correctly, the "Tablet not initialized" error is due to an incorrect installation of the mouse filter driver. The Fujitsu Pen drivers must be installed first... then the CIC mouse filter driver gets installed.
If you go to "Mouse" in Control Panel and then look at the hardware you should see the CIC Mouse Filter "device" and *perhaps* another device if you have a regular mouse hooked up (or had one hooked up). You will not see a device that represents the Fujitsu Pen, since that has been replaced by the mouse filter.

Hope you all don’t mind if I jump in here, but I have a few related questions:
(for the 3400, fine tuning for win2K)
Is there a stand alone trigger of some sort for screen rotation, without having to go 4ish levels deep into the display settings? Or better yet… have it always in landscape in the mini-dock, always in portrait if mobile, I guess I’m dreaming.
How similar are the 3400 and 3500, I have been looking for any and all info on the programmable hotpad for the 3400, an recently found, on the dot DE site, a few system files for the hot pad for 3500, will these work on 3400? How do you use it? I would like to have it hard coded to that ctrl-alt-del app that you get with the SAS driver.
Lastly, changing the subject slightly, with all this vast 3400 experience around here, does anyone have a source for batteries, or know of a way to get my battery refurbished???

I believe that's what the TRIROT application is for (on the 3400), although I never spent enough time working with it to get it to work. The rotation capabilities on the 3500... with the ATI driver set.... are much better IMHO. But you can't use them with the 3400.

The files that you found are most likely the developers toolkit. Great stuff if you want to write your own application that monitors the hotpad and then "does something" when it is pressed. I don't know of any "canned" application that monitors the hotpad and then, let's say, executes an application when it is pressed. But, that would be a handly little app if some programmer had time on his hands.

You can find new and used 3400/3500 batteries on eBay on a regular basis. The 3500 battery (3100mAH) is a superior unit.

Hi guys, long time no see...
I came by for a visit and found that 135 of my 136 posts are in threads that must now be archived. This includes, sadly, the step by step disertation on Win2K install and the link to the collected software. I thought I would repost the link:
http://www.thesprocket.net/3400setup.zip
The step by step is included in the zip file.
I just wanted to make sure this package was still/again available for free, as there is a guy on ebay selling his package on CD for $10. I haven't been willing to spend the $10 to find out if it is my package, basicly I don't think there could be any repercussion if I did.
