I am not sure whether this has been talked in other thread.
I think this may be useful for some users of Acer C110.
I did read several threads about the D:/Images files, such
as whether we can delete them. Everybody know those files are
the same image files on the three recovery CDs. But
how to use it, I did not read anybody has mentioned
it. ( Maybe I am wrong )
This time, before I sent my C110 back to repair the latch.
I want to back up the machine to the initial factory
installation. (I do not want the repair guys see all the
crap I have installed on the machine :D)
I struggled for couple of hours but failed to boot
the machine from the first bootable recovery CD.
The reason is I did not purchase the Acer external USB
CD-ROM. I already have a Plextor USB external USB
2.0 CD-Writor. But this time, I found that the C110 could
not boot from my Plextor CD-Writor. It recognize the
CD-ROM and boot to show a menu to choose the USB or
Firewire external CD-ROM. However, the machine froze
when it tried to run some USB driver after I select the
USB external drive. I tried many other methods, even
built and burned my own bootable CD with DOS level
USB drivers. None of my methods work for the Plextor
external CD Writor. It is strange that the first
bootable part seems to be read by the machine.
But after boot the DOS, the CD-ROM could
not be recognized. Therefore, the content on the
CD-ROM can not be read except the Virtual floopy
disk part on the bootable CD-ROM.
The changing point was when I entered the BIOS(CMOS)
to see whether I can change some I/O(USB) settings
to make the Plextor CD-ROM work. I found under the
"Advance" menu, there is an option of "Boot from
HARD Disk recovery" ( I can not remember exactly
the words since I have sent back the machine).
I immediately realize that it is related to the
D:/Image files. I enabled it and when the mechine
boots, I hit F12 and there is one more option
now (D2D recovery). I chose it and it did use
the hard disk images to back the machine up
to the initial factory installation.
I double-checked the Acer "Recovery instruction".
They do not mention this method at all.
Hope this post is useful for you.
