View Full Version : Hello, Since I didn't like the pre-installed

Hello,

Since I didn't like the pre-installed version of XP Tablet, I decided to try and build an XP Tablet installation CD.

It turns out to be very easy. What you need is a XP Pro Installation CD, the i386 directory from your M200 and the components directory from the M200.

- Create a temp directory
- Copy all directories (except the i386 dir) from the XP Pro cd to this temp directory
- Copy the I386 dir from the M200 to the temp directory
- Copy the CMPNENTS directory to the temp directory (in the root-dir will suffice)
- Extract the boot image of the cd (for a how-to, check out tutorials on slip streaming XP with SP1)
- Burn the entire image to a CD (also here, for the settings to make it bootable, refer to a tutorial on slip streaming)

The installation will startout as a normal XP Pro installation. In the graphical part, at one point, the system will ask for
the location of a file (not sure what the name is). Browse in the CMPNENTS dir until you find the TABLETPC.CAB and select it. Now the tablet pc stuff will be copied (and the startup logo is replaced!)

(Note: The serial is on the back of the M200.)

I made a copy of the files to a new partition to reinstall without a bootable CD drive. (...) Works great! It is usefull to have partition magic or something similar at your disposal to be able to change the partitions.

The drivers can be found on the Toshiba site. I also found a document describing the standard installation order of drivers there (in the list of driver downloads, AL OS's)

I hope this will be usefull for someone!

Regards,

Ruud

Thanks for sharing. I have been thinking of creating a custom DVD with a few of my more critical apps' CDs on it and this will really help with the OS part:-)

WinXP SP2 is just around the corner. I plan to make one of these installation disks when it is released.

I didn't see the document that describes the standard installation of the drivers?

"The drivers can be found on the Toshiba site. I also found a document describing the standard installation order of drivers there (in the list of driver downloads, AL OS's)"

Can you send a link or provide more details as to how to find it.
thanks

I just took a look on the Toshiba website and had no luck finding the drive list install order either. I've been known to miss things, so I'd appreciate the link or document ID order also.

Thanks in advance.

I found it on the European site (for English, http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com). I assumed the content would be the same as for the US.

The date is 11th dec. 2003 and the title is 'Installation instructions'

Hmm, I figured out those instructions for myself from other tablets a while ago and made a CD...I've recently installed XP with them and now my on screen keyboard doesn't show. I installed SP2 and it showed for a bit, but at some point went back to the way it was originally.

Where did you get the CMPNENTS directory in these instructions? I didn't see them when I made my CD and had to compile it myself.

I also have issues with several items using .NET (TIP keyboard disappears in SP1 and SP2 after installing .NET 1.1, MSN messanger broken) so the scripts I found (from tc-one-thousand.com) to do this might have been wrong for the M200.

couple questions:
1) will this work for a 3500?
2) how big is your I386 directory? (mine is 178MB (186,754,712 bytes)
3) my 3500 doesn't have a CMPNENTS.. where is it?
4) my TABLETPC.CAB is in the I386 directory.. is that right?
5) after i make this cd, is it bootable using any usb-cd drive? or does it still have the limitations of toshiba drives or some special sony ones that work..?
6) how did you do it without a cd, can u elaborate on the partitioning process and setup?

thanks SO MUCH.... i have the original Windows XP tablet edition cd, but i have no external cd drive.. so i'm lost right now... partitioning and installing from hdd might work... but i dunno how to do that...

thadk
05-26-2004, 04:20 PM
1) likely
2) 0 bytes, it doesn't copy automatically after fresh install. I don't have my TPC install CD or my original backup handy.
3) You might try making it like I did (follow instructions at the acer install disk thread and tc-one-thousand.com ( http://www.soton.ac.uk/~jamescj/tc1000/software.html ), still not sure if I did something wrong to make the little gliches I mentioned occur. Otherwise everything is great. No extranious processes.
4) Think that should end up in the CMPNENTS dir, but it will ask if it's not right. I compiled this too.
5) Still limited by the mediocre toshiba bios in this way.
6) used BCD following instructions on the acer forum for their installation disk, subsituting in the tc-one-thousand.com stuff to build the CMPNENTS dir part (since the acer has it intact). You don't really even need an official XP Pro install disc with this method (except to get the Setup.exe and autorun files if you can't boot it)

another note: your disc won't work on other brands/models of tablet I've heard.

Heh heh! I fixed my bug. In an effort to keep all the threads people might follow back to solve the issue up to date: I
removed the mscor*.dll from system32, uninstalled and reinstalled .NET 1.1, and it works. Tough to track down--googling for error messages is great--never used the Win System log before so it took me a while to find it. http://www.gotdotnet.com/Community/MessageBoard/Thread.aspx?id=216309

The CMPNENTS directory is on the HD of the original installation of your M200. It contains all the extra's that make XP Pro into XP Tablet. You really need it. My CMPNENTS dir has 3 sub dirs:

\CMPNENTS
\MEDIACTR
\NETFX
--\TABLETPC
-----\I386 -> TABLETPC.CAB

The last one is the one you need. I haven't used the content of the others yet (anyone an idea??)

The \I386 dir on the HD is also required (460.905.179 bytes). It seems that the installation description files have references to the required tabletpc.cab. A normal XP Pro's \i386 files wouldn't ask for it.

The whole procedure will probably work for other tablets as long as you have the CMPNENTS directory together with the applicable I386 dir. The CD I created was not specifically for the M200, drivers had to be added afterwards (like any standard XP Installation), so I am pretty sure that the CD itself also works on any tablet.

Good luck!

Hey,

Thanks for the nice howto. Only problem is I don't happen to have a copy of XP-pro lying around. I'm not too concerned about preserving my current setup so just the base CD's are fine but is there anyway to combine them into 1 DVD?

Thanks again!

I am interested in making XP Tablet PC installation CD for M200. I do have a copy of XP-Pro. I suspect that I will need a key to install XP Tablet PC. If the key of XP-Pro is used, what else I can do? Is it possible that the key came with M200 can be retrieved?

Thanks!

I could never get the SP2 ready disk to work. I ended up just going with the clean install disk described at the top of this thread and installing SP2 immediately after. Been a week, seems to run without a hitch.

I just found this article:
http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=47212312&pgno=1

Which gives you instructions for how to take a XP CD and pre-patch SP2 on to, it then burn a new XP with SP2 CD. Just curious if anyone has yet to try combining that method with the method laid here for making a XP Tablet install CD? After a quick glance at both methods, I don't see why they wouldn't both work towards ultimately creating a XP Tablet 2005 CD, but before I tried it out, I was just curious if anyone else has already tried?

You're not the only one. ;) I only got my m200 a week or so ago, and was surprised that they didn't have SP2 loaded on it. In fact a lot of my time has gone to doing version updates, which obviously weren't stock because Toshiba uses an image that they haven't updated at all in a while.

I'm german and i bought a m200 with an english os on it. i would like to create a german xp-tablet-edition cd using my standard xp-cd (which is german). is it possible to use all the files from my german xp-edition and only add the (english) tablet-specific files?

Perhaps, the necessary tablet-pc files are not language-specific...

If that does not work, because the tabletpc.cab is in english:
Is it possible to use this file from my old acer c102 disks (german)?

Deerhunter,

I believe if you search around in the Compaq forum you'll find the exact answer to your question. I remember the instructions I read having been for the German disk originally. It was on some site called www.tc-one-thousand.com or .net or something along those lines also.

It should be possible to use your old tabletpc.cab also, but you just might have to run some more updates after you're done.

Randyspawn: I got that error too, but I fixed it by renaming this folder C:\I386\winntupg to C:\I386\winntupg_ ... The installation will complain that they're missing and won't allow you to make an "upgrade" install ... but who cares about that anyway?

I just got my m200 today, and cant find the CMPNENTS directory. Shouldnt it be in c:\windows\ where I386 is?

How big is the directory? Would it be possible for someone to send it to me? (if the directory would be the same as mine)

Update:

My m200 was ordered from newegg, so it might not be right from toshiba.

When I goto my computer, it says I have tablet pc edition 2002 installed.

Also, my I386 folder is 450 megs, and doesnt have a winntupg folder in it.

Is mine different because its version 2002?

If someone sent me their I386 and cmpnents directory, would my CD key still work with it?

bignateyk

update number 3:

My bios version is ACPI version 1.60

This means that it is pretty new, so I dont understand why mine says version 2002, or why it doesnt have CMPNENTS, or the right sized I386 Directory.

Anyone know whats going on?

rstegers,

I read that you have made a working Windows XP Tablet PC Edition cd. I recently purchased a M200 and formatted the drive right away to get rid of all the spam Toshiba installed. I thought I downloaded a working copy from my university, however it only installed Windows XP Pro. I have both cds, the second one contains the tabletpc.cab file. According to what you said, it seems that I need the directory i386 from the original install. Do you know where I can obtain this perhaps? Also when you copied the CMPNENTS directory, where did you grab that from? Sorry I am a noob to tablets, any help would be great.

Thanks,

bignateyk: The CMPNENTS folder should be in C:\CMPNENTS if you have it... And no, your M200 is not different because it has 2002 installed. All M200's came with Tablet 2002 preinstalled. You upgrade to 2005 by installing Windows XP Service pack 2. You can also do what I did and slipstream the service pack into the installing files in the I386 folder. If you do that you will probably get the correct size :)

Please note that if you do not have the correct files in the CMPNENTS folder (Most important are, of course, TABLETPC.CAB (71.4MB) and you should also have the media center file; MEDIACTR.CAB (69MB)) there's no other way than to aquire the files from an external source ...

Would it be "illegal" for someone to send me their CMPNENTS directory? (I dont see how since it wouldnt work without a TPC cd key...)

Also, can someone confirm the size of their I386 directory? (before or after the slipsteam)

Anyway... If anyone would be so kind as to help me out with the CMPNENTS directory, let me know. I've got some FTP space to upload to.

Thanks

Mine didn't come with a components directory either. Grrrrr. But, then, not all of the Toshiba apps are necessarily malevolent, so doing the factory restore and then some uninstalling isn't that bad.

Hello GOATViRuS,

I have no idea why the original tablet pc CD's won't work.

I used the original I386 directory since I assumed (and still think) that there must be some difference in the installation script that makes it install the Tablet components as well (and by that converting XP Pro into Tablet Edition). I would say that the original XP Tablet CD should contain the right install files.

My M200 was delivered without any MS installation CD - basically why I started to create my own - but there were recovery CD's. I assume you must have these?? The right I386 and \CMPNENTS dir are included in the image. It may take a while to first recover the tablet and then reinstall but I think it's the only way.

Looking at other replies in this thread it seems that Toshiba has more than one CD (DVD?) package for the M200. As said, mine came with basic recovery CD's (Ghost). It might help if we would all know about other packages to perhaps provide everybody with an alternative procedure...

Good luck!

Just as a matter of interest, which Features have you not put on? I've disabled the Bluetooth one (no need at present), the Sensiva thing, and would like to reduce what runs at start up, but I'm not really sure which are needed and which aren't.

One thing that I do have a question about is ctfmon, which I know can be a big resource user. I've left it running, as it seems to be needed for alternate input to office programs, but does it actually need to be running?

Information about ctfmon from: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=282599

(I've disabled it on other PCs, though being in the UK, left the UK keyboard as the only option)

I'm sorry to dig a old thread up, but I have a few questions about this. Has anyone tried it with a recently new M200? I'm getting mine soon and want to do this, but I'm a bit worried.

Slipstreaming: Is this what you guys are referring to? http://www.msfn.org/articles.php?action=show&showarticle=49

Do you have to install drivers after you're done? How do you get some of the applications back that were preloaded (i.e. onenote, maybe others that I don't know about yet)?

Wcrocker
03-28-2005, 12:33 AM
gear02,

Something tells me this thread and others like it will never be old. The article you reference is a great way to perform the slipstream process and yes you will need to install the Toshiba drivers, OneNote, etc.. once you are done with the reinstall of the OS.

In the M200 FAQ (http://tabletpcbuzz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12414) there is a list of the install order of drivers and updates.

Note that Tohisba released a number of newer drivers post SP2 geared to address service pack issues. Here's a link to that page.

http://tinyurl.com/38u2v

Emmadw,

I don't proclaim to be an expert on this, but from what I've read ctfmon.exe handles alternate input like text and voice recognition among other things, making it somewhat essential to Tablet operations. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong on that. It is certainly a resource hog.

ok, i just had an idea as i have been viewing this thread for about 5 days trying to put together my own fresh install CD.... well i didnt have the components directory to copy so i was beat outta installing it, but then i thought well, it has a media center sub directory too[eureka][eureka][eureka]i researched media center edition 2005 and found out it has 2 cd's and u can download them easier than trying to find tablet pc edition...(been looking for 4 days for tablet but found media center in 10 seconds)... anyway u can just get the components directory off the second CD... no i havent acctually tried this because i am still DLin the 2nd cd but will tell u how well it works, if at all....

GOATViRuS.... The copy you DLed is probably the MSDN version. It will not work with an OEM serial number, they are different. Using a standard XP serial will only install XP, not XPTE. There is only one file that needs changed/edited to make the MSDN version a OEM one. There is a thread on here somewhere that explains how.

Sparks1641

You r right i am downloading the MSDN vefrsion, but i need not worry since i have a OEM(the one that came with my CPU) and MSDN(the one that i got from my school) Number for my Tablet.. Anyway my suggestion was for other people who dont have the CMPNETTS directory... if they followed the instucttions and just took that directory from the second CD, it should work.... Since the second CD isnt needed till after u enter the KEY then the files should be the same on both the MSDN and OEM version of the install. Anyway i was just suggesting something for others who dont have the CMPNETTS directory anymore.. but i dont see how u can fit this all on one 700mb CD, cause my CD1 is 579mb and CD2 is 197mb...

Sparks1641
04-19-2005, 06:27 PM
Ok, i just checked and yeah, u can follow the instructions, and if u cant find the cmpnetnts directory on your tablet then u can just DL media center edition 2005 cd2 and it will have the cmpnts directory u need... then u can make your CD....

Could anyone kindly give me the I386 directory using for window tablet only(not with any pack)? Or a working key for window tablet SP1 as compromised (it is a little bit illegal but much faster than sending all the I386 directory). Thanks all.

SOS!! Please help...

Like you guys I wasn't smart enough to have thought of an installation CD earlier. My tablet refuses to boot up on account of a corrupted file. I have Win XP Pro but I cannot access the files from I386 dir from the M200 anymore as required.
I called up Toshiba support and was told to use the Recovery DVD to wipe out all my apps and data and start from a clean slate.
I'd be very grateful if someone could send me the files that I need from an existing configuration or burn me a copy of the installation CD. I'm in mid-town Manhattan, so if any of you are in the area (NYC, NJ,CT) I can also swing by to borrow it for 20min to make a quick copy at Kinko's.

Why don't you start with the steps outlined in the first post of this thread. That should basically do it if you have your original configuration around.

@ mrastogi : Can't you use the XP Pro CD with recovery console to restore the file system enough to be able to boot again? (Another option would be to use a bootable Knoppix CD (Linux) to access the disk and fetch the required files.)

Thanks alot to rstegers for the guide. I know I'm a bit delayed in terms of the thread being started over a year ago! But I have just purchased a tablet PC, an Toshiba M200 to be exact 2nd hand. The problem is that the OS supplied was straight forward XP SP2 and not the tablet PC version as first thought. The guy i got it from didnt give me any cds either so hence my predicament.

In terms of licensing I have the sticker on the bottom with my serial but am finding it impossible to obtain the tablet pc version cd to use it with. And the fact its currently running straight XP SP2, there no 1386 or CMPTS files to borrow!

Ant advice would be greatly appreciated

Anyway my suggestion was for other people who dont have the CMPNETTS directory... if they followed the instucttions and just took that directory from the second CD, it should work.... Since the second CD isnt needed till after u enter the KEY then the files should be the same on both the MSDN and OEM version of the install. Anyway i was just suggesting something for others who dont have the CMPNETTS directory anymore.. but i dont see how u can fit this all on one 700mb CD, cause my CD1 is 579mb and CD2 is 197mb...

Could the MSDN CD use my M4's serial number under itself to install?

No, just use licence key provided by Microsoft for the MSDN distribution.

Having read through all pages of this thread, it looks like the key sticking point to creating the XP Table Install CD for the M200 is the lack of the CMPNENTS directory (or, more specifically, the TABLETPC.CAB file under it). I've searched my M200's hard drive and the recovery disk provided by Toshiba. No problem with the I386 folder: that's right under /WINDOWS. But, there's no CMPNENTS folder anywhere. What I did find was a folder with 6 files in it at:

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download
\81df6c322a2619e8a8b893fd1e707d3b\sp2qfe
\root\cmpnents\tabletpc\i386

(I've split the path for readability).

Those files are:

ctxtgr.dll
tabtip.exe
tcserver.cfg
tcserver.exe
tiplib.dll
tiptsf.dll

Would those file happen to be everything that the TABLETPC.CAB file extracts to? If so, is there any way to re-CABify them back to a TABLETPC.CAB file to let me build this CD?

No, my tabletpc.cab has 296 files in it (at least on my tecra m4) While most are jpg, gif and other image files, there are at least 10 exe and 20 to 30 dll files.

I'm struggling with this issue myself.

This thread seems to have found a solution that requires MSDN installation files:

I like my M200 an all, but if you ask me, it's pretty crummy of Toshiba to not provide install media for software that I paid for.

I wish Toshiba would offer a clean Tabletpc with SP2 recovery disk with all the apps in a seperate folder or disk.
