Okay,
I posted in the wrong forum over the weekend and I apologize. But, I'm still in need of a few answers.

1. Can XP from a Brand new CD w/ SP2 load Win XP with Tablet Functions if I have all of the drivers from Gateway?

2. If I make a backup DVD of my hard-drive, will this DVD restore the system if there is a "Crash"??

3. Will Motion Recovery CD's work on a Gateway Rebranded??

Otherwise, I'll buy a new hard-drive and ghost what I have and keep the other as a "external" backup. I'd rather do the DVD backup so I can just boot from the DVD and copy the files over. Maybe I'm missing something though.

Nothing is wrong with my system now, but with the end of the school year coming, I'd like to know my bases are covered. I lost a quarter's worth of grades on a Palm a few years back and don't want that again.

KJPenny - I can't believe you're thinking about backup and recovery BEFORE your hard drive starts to make a loud clicking noise! [eureka]

While #1, #2 and #3 should work, ghosting to another hard drive is the best guarantee for success because all the stuff in the registry, etc. will be on the backup drive and you can swap them out in a couple minutes.

John,.
I don't want to question the expert, but the way I read 1. is an XP cd with Gateway drivers, which, as I understand it won't work.
Kcjpenny: It needs to be XP tablet edition, and as John says, avoid all this forward planning, it'll never catch on :D

1. A Regular Windows XP CD will not include the Tablet PC specific applications and OS components. You need a copy of Windows XP for Tablet PCs CD.

2. Yes, it would, assuming the backup software has an recovery feature. Laugh, but during my investigation of backup software for my home network I found more than one product would backup but wouldn't recover unless you purchased the "professional" version.

3. Don't know.

For my home network I eventually developed the following strategy:

1. All My Docs on desktop machines are redirected to a server. I use Offline sync to allow unconnected access to files (for the tablet and laptops we have).
2. The server weekly does a backup of the differential backup and monthly does a full backup onto an attached drive.
3. Periodically I create an image of the desktop machines on the server (the image is then backed up via the server process).

This may seem complicated but it's harder to describe than use; Other than the desktop imaging it is completely automatic and practically invisible to my wife and kids. Doing it this way allows me to insure that my families files are backed up (twice, if you count backup from desktop to server and server to backup device). My next steps are to buy a cheap timer (like you use for a light) to turn on and off the external hard drive and implement VSS for dealing with accidentaly deleted files in between backups.

It may seem silly to have this much protection for "family" files but I've gone through more than one lost hard drive and the worst part isn't rebuidling the OS but realizing I've lost files and images I treasured.

I've been running under the assumption that any WIN XP pro cd has the tablet components.

If SP2 is slipstreamed, the tablet components are on the install CD.

According to the wisdom here and on the MS tablet news group the ONLY way to get tablet components is from the OEM or via MSDN, normal XP discs do not have the tablet stuff on them.
