View Full Version : I have the Beta I just got in the mail after ord
I have the Beta I just got in the mail after ordering on a whim. It scared me with all the CD's so I just loaded Office XP to my tablet. Since I'm a newbie to the tablet what is your opinion....should I load the Beta and try it or stick with the XP and just put the Beta in a drawer? I did download the tablet download for XP. If your suggestion is to do the Beta, do I need to remove the XP and/or the tablet download?
Just curious

Well it really depends on what you want to do. For the extra features the beta gives, I would definitely recommend upgrading. But the fact that it is beta software is still there, which means that the possibility of it causing problems with your system is also there. Personally I have been running it for about a month now, no problems whatsoever. And as for your question of removing Office XP, you don't have to remove it. When you install the beta it will ask if you want to upgrade from XP (which will remove XP from the system, but keep your settings), or just install it as a second and new office installation.

I have been running the beta since late February on several systems and it's actually been more stable than XP overall. The extra tablet features - namely ink support - are very worth it. The upgrade process is easy, although you may want to consider uninstalling the Tablet PC pack for Office XP, since that may cause some problems (although maybe not).

The beta is worth it if only for the ink support in Word. Frankly, the ink support in the other apps is not all that great, and Outlook has been crashing very consistently for me. I am downloading beta 2 right now from the MSDN site and hope that this will resolve that problem. Excel could really benefit from in-place ink support, but it is not there.
Word has been rock solid for me in beta 1. I'd say go for it.

I believe I'm gonna go for it. I have the Beta 2 so Saturday's the day, I'll load it then and also try to set up my wireless network. I'm hoping I won't be pulling my hair out by the end of the day. :-)

I have been using Beta 2 on my main work desktop and my tablet for about 3 weeks now with absolutely 0 problems. YMMV.
i thinking maybe i should load it to my desktop too then. we use office 2000 at work and i'm always doing work at home so i've just left the 2000 on my desktop, so maybe its time i moved that up too, it should all work together right?! :-)
i should probably say here, i'm an admin asst for an insurance company and my tablet is my own to keep myself organized here at work. i've hinted what a wonder they could be but of course the company isn't keen on purchasing them. so i'm trying to keep myself ahead of the game. :-) these forums are a wonder! so many talented and knowledgeable people!
so i've decided to jump right in with the Beta Office, all I can do is mess it up and go back to XP. hehe! but i'll try my hardest.....

The Beta seems stable enough. Every once in a while Excel seems to take the processor for a workout and it needs to be shutdown and restarted (or the tablet needs to be restarted) to get it back to normal CPU usage.
