I'm trying to add ink comments to a previously formatted Word document. However, I find that I cannot add the comment without destroying the formatting. Is there any way around this? I would like the comments and text to be side-by side, but their formatting to be independent of each other. Thanks for any advice.

The ink drawing object can be formatted like a picture box.
Right click on the object and select format object. Click the Layout tab. Now your can make the object appear where/how you need.

Word 2003 handles this MUCH better. Ink overlays whatever is underneath it, at least in my experience. The document layout is not affected at all. You might still be able to get in on the beta by signing up for it at:

I heartily recommend it.
