I have a T4020 2.0 GHz w/ 1GB of memory and it is a nice machine, but it has one annoying problem. The mouse pointer lags (i.e. is slow to respond) at times. It is like the mouse is set to a very low priority interrupt. When it is having this problem, you can move the mouse back and forth and the pointer is a second behind where you are pointing. It makes it very hard to click on something. Is there any way to improve this?

This is the only computer I have ever had that does this. It is extremely irritating at times. I know it is a common problem because I bumped into another T4020 owner and he was having the same problem.

I am a long time user of Fujitsu laptops (mostly S and now T series). My first Fujitsu, an S6120 had exactly the same problem. The T4020 does too and I can make an educated guess on what causes it.

The mouse sluggishness is caused by 2 things:

1. XP : Windows XP is slightly sucky when it has to balance IO with high CPU/HDD load. It will prioritize the CPU/HDD ahead of the keyboard and mouse. You might want to try and use Windows 2003 and lose your cool trying to get the drivers right. haha.

2. HEAT : This is what used to cause mouse sluggishness in older Fujistu S series, parts of which the T series has inherited. The small black buffers at the bottom dont raise the machine enough to allow for good airflow under it for cooling.

To minimize mouse slowness, do the following:

1. Keep the laptop cool, Vantec and Targus make good laptop coolers. Try to get one with a built-in USB hub.

2. Increase RAM, defrag HDD, etc, etc...basically keep the system happy.

3. Most importantly...remember that its a "thin-and-light" category machine. Don't load it up with graphic, CPU or IO intensive applications and expect it to perform like a champion and/or stay cool. Wierd things happen when machines lose their cool :P
