How about Windows XP. :) Seriously, you already have everything you need to syncronize files between your desktop and your Tablet included in the Tablet's operating system.
Try selecting "Help and Support" from the "Start" menu and searching for "Offline Files". You should find everything you need. I hope this helps,

If you can have the ability to connect both computers by Firewire (IEEE 1394), I would consider doing so and then keeping the files in sync via Window XP's Briefcase function. (XP will automatically create a private network connection between two computers connected by Firewire.) For example, I created a briefcase on the "client" computer that consisted of all items from the My Documents folder (a folder with hundreds or thousands of my files) from the "server" computer and was able to sync the materials quite easily. On the server computer, you would modify and add documents as usual. On the client computer, you would modify documents (or create new documents) within the "briefcase" and the additions/modifications would be synced as often as you desired. Let me know if you would like more details.
I am sure there are other solutions for syncing, including commercial solutions. The solution mentioned is inexpensive (no software purchase needed), relatively easy to implement, and may provide the functionality you desire.

that sounds a little easier - does it have to be firewire - can it be carried out over a conventional network ?

Synchrony involves comparison of date and time stamps. I don't "think," the Tabletpc was made to be a synchronizing device like a Pocketpc. (although when time allows I am going to try and fool my Tablet into thinking it is my PPC via wireless Active Sync). That is not to say there will be various *workarounds*. Exactly what files do you want to synchronize? Do you have to synchronize the files or can you just copy and paste them into your Tabletpc while on a shared network? Have you read the briefcase instruction on your Tablet?
Summary: To synchronize files on connected computers using Briefcase While the computers are connected, open Briefcase on your portable computer and copy the appropriate files from your main computer.
Work on the files on your portable computer.
When you have finished working on the files, connect the two computers if they were disconnected, open Briefcase on your portable computer, and then do one of the following:
To update all the files, on the Briefcase menu, click Update All.
To update only some of the files, select the files you want to update, and then on the Briefcase menu, click Update Selection.
When you are using Briefcase to copy files from your main computer to your portable computer, the two computers must be connected, either over a network or by a direct cable connection.
While you are working on your files, the two computers do not need to be connected.

Fenster: I don't think you have to run it via Firewire -- although Firewire will give you more speedy transfers than exist on most networks. You could probably run it over a network -- you just need the appropriate folder sharing parameters in place (also required if using Firewire) as well as identifying the "server" computer's IP address. If you plan to expose your folders to the network, make sure you put in place appropriate restrictions to prevent everyone and his brother from accessing your files.
Although a Tablet PC may not be designed to sync like a PocketPC, it is still possible to provide effective file synchronization.
