Hi there,

I just returned from a gathering of local hard- & software-retailers which carried the name "computer flea market". anyway, among many commercial offers, there were some hobbyists and I even saw two TC1000´s there.

One of the guys had a (obviously self-burnt) CD with a label "Tablet PC/Media-Center Edition", which he got from another person. I was standing behind him when he opened it in Explorer. As far as I could get it, there were three dir´s in root, named Components, Netfx and Tabletpc. All of them contained an I386-Dir and when he opened the roots readme.txt, there was something like "CD for persons installing Windows XP Media Center or Tablet PC Edition".

Has anyone around here seen such a CD or do you know where one can officially buy it? May be one can turn a normal WinXP into WinXP Tablet PC Edition with it and so I could finally do a really clean install of my device.

My understanding is you can't officially buy a retail copy of Windows XP Tablet Edition. It's only available to OEMs and MSDN subscribers. To install Win XP TE you need the proper install code and the cd you saw.

WinXP Tablet PC edition is not available as a stand alone product -- although there may be some limited exceptions for developers.

You have another post asking a similar question.

The Windows XP Tablet PC Edition CD is used to install the operating system. The operating system is the software that allows the computer to work [allows you to use the computer]. After the operating system is installed, you do not need the CDs on a daily basis. The CDs are then used on a emergency basis to RESTORE/RECOVER your computer. By that I mean, you startup the computer [boot from the CD] and then reinstall the operating system. Doing so fixes the computer and thereby allows you to use it again. Have I answered your question in a clear manner. If not, please ask the next question. I'll try to help. Welcome to the Buzz.

Like has been mentioned, you can't purchase a retail copy of Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. Microsoft did this to ensure quality hardware was being used with the OS. You can get it via MSDN though, and starting with SP2 the license key you have determines what OS sku is installed (Home, Pro, Tablet, or Media Center). I've got this CD (because I have MSDN), but as of right now, they can't legally be distributed outside of that.

Talking about CD's. Does anyone know how to slipstream SP2 to a Windows XP SP1a RIS image? I tried to "integrate" or "update" my i386 folder but no go.
