Currently MSN messenger 5.0 only supports ink input but does not have the capability to display inked messages...It allows you to ink your responses then before sending it, it converts the ink to text.

I believe the pictures displayed here are for "future" versions where you can actually see inked responses (and drawings).

Snapshot from MSN 5.0:

Interesting. However, this discussion seems to concern Windows Messenger 5, not MSN Messenger 5. Two totally different beasts, even though they seem alike.

oops...sorry about the confusion on that. I was not aware of the release of Windows Messenger 5.0.

Very cool, just ink chatting with Justin here. This isn't vaporware, and I must say this is one cool update to Windows Messenger.

Excellent! So when is the forum going ink? :)

I installed it as well, Spencer and I chatted just a bit. We had a little trouble with a couple of messages not making it, but it was pretty cool .....

I'm sure Spencer will get the forum up to "Ink Speed" ASAP! [8D]

i just tried it and its pretty cool !
apart from a small glitch that the ink button turned grey
and I can't click on it, but its fine after I restart the messenger. Perhaps it just beta stability issue.
Can't wait for the released version.

I think its is beta stability and beta speed - it seems to cough along. It will be a great step forward though once all the debugging code is removed.

Has anyone been able to send ink to a "non-pen" computer?

Spencer
03-25-2003, 01:37 PM
I've been able to send to a non-pen computer (desktop) that is running this beta. If the computer is not, then ink isn't allowed. As for the forum becoming ink enabled, it is on my list for sure! [8D]

Spencer, just noticed, this should be in the software forum :)

I have a non ink friend who installed the Beta and we went able to get it to work.

I also thought that this should be in the software forum but it depends on who starts it.

Spencer

Yup, you are right. It is now in the software forum. :-)

You are also right about adding ink to the forum, It is just a matter of sitting down and figuring it out. I'll be sure and put it up towards the top of my new feature list!

Gareth - I'm suprised that you were not able to get it to work from a non-ink enabled computer. I'm assuming the obvious that you had the send/recieve ink option turned on. Were both of you running Win XP? That is what I had in my situation - XP TPC Edition and XP Pro on the desktop. Curious to know if the operating system has something to do with it.

Maybe some kind of Active X(or whatever it's called now) control to replace the Quick Reply window making it look like this[8D]:

I havent checked it personally but my friend's build number was higher than 5.0.0149 which is what I downloaded (hers was something like 253 I forgot the exact number - but she installed the exact same file I did). I also need to check if her Windows XP is up to date. There may be some service pack or other enhancement that WM relies on to receive ink.

hehe sorry about posting in wrong forum.

Its still a beta and the final version will support ink > non ink platform messages, its going to be very nice.. chatting with friends in own handwriting... cant wait ;)

It does support it, Gary was just having problems I'm guessing because MSN and Windows Messengers are two different prodcuts, make sure you're opening the right one. MSN Messenger 5 has a higher build number.

It's on my friend's computer. I'm surprised she has MSN Messenger installed because she has Windows XP. I'll bug her when she gets home from work.

Gareth Sargeant

She was running MSN too. I wonder why?

Anyway it works now.

I've noticed that it only seems to transmit very simple messages 4or 5 words one you write a long sentence or draw a big picture it gives the error message " this ink message could not be sent to all recipients"

Did anyone else observe this? I hope it's a beta restriction only.

Yeah, large images seem to get killed for some reason, I'm sure it will get fixed.

Spencer
03-27-2003, 05:56 AM
Yes, I noticed that as well. I just passed it off as a bug in the beta like you guys, I'm sure it will get fixed by the final version. I think it may have something to do with the size you have your window set at. If the user on the other end makes his window full screen, I didn't run into the problem as much. I guess it is harder to wrap ink around than it is to wrap text.

Well, guys, don't forget to tel Microsoft what they've done wrong!

That's right! Where do we complain(report)? I got my copy from this thread:-) It is important to provide feedback. Especially since this will be a type of killer app - a reason to think about ink (hey I copyright that rhyme!)

Well I downloaded the 5.0 version at Win. Msgr. and no ink :(

When i click I get the new input panel but I cannot write directly onto the Msgr. Window.

You have to enable it in prefrences and the other person must have 5.0 also.
