View Full Version : Before buying this Toshiba M4, I read all posts

Before buying this Toshiba M4, I read all posts on TabletBuzzForum, ... I have done research for as long as 4 months... then I happily bought a M4. Online reviews all gave it high ratings.
Now I got stuck. I don't know if other people also heavily rely on the standby/hibernation funcationality as much as I do.
I purchase a Tablet PC simply because I need a productivity tool with a) pen input, b) standby/hibernation...
I frequently take down notes and then put it into sleep and when I have more thoughts, I open the lid and then write down a few lines, and then put it back into sleep again.
Now this standby/hibernation becomes a nightmare for me:
1. Sometimes I just could not let it sleep: after you send it to sleep, the screen is off, the harddisk is off, the wirelss is off, the system becomes non-responsive, but the fan is still on, the unit is still working, it just hangs.
2. A lot of times i just cannot bring it back from sleep. It just does not wake up. I have to press power button for more than 6 seconds and let it down. I lost my data all the time.
3. It mysteriously shutdown after waking-up: even if I successfully put it to sleep, and successfuly wake it up, it mysteriously shutdown right after being waking up. Again my data was gone.
These three recurring problems make this unit completely fail in terms hibernation/standby.
These problems are not unique on M4, I had a R15S822, it has the same problems.
I am really very very disspointed. If I send it back, I waste my precious time and I have to research the market again and look for another good model.
If I don't send it back, my improvement of productivity relies on being able to standby fast and resume fast so I can write down my thoughts.
What can I do now?

I'm sorry to hear you having these problems. This sounds more like a Windows issue rather than anything else, unfortunately, but it could be related to Toshiba utilities like the power saver. For some reason the power saver quit out on me and just doesn't work, but I never liked using it to begin with.
I don't have the problem going in and out of standby or hibernation. It's just always worked for me, and I do let it go into standby quite often when it is running on batteries. I don't use hibernation really, but the few times I had used it it woke up fine.
If you do decide to return the unit, it looks like Gateways new 14" widescreen tablet is a winner, or at least a close match specwise... and personally if it were available at the same time as the Toshiba I would have considered it, although I would want to see how it is in portrait mode due to the widescreen.
Try uninstalling the power saver and see if that fixes the problem. At first I liked Toshiba's utilities, than I just got annoyed with them and most of them have been booted off my system. That's my only guess; the problem seems like it is software related.

I had exactly the same problems with my M200. I ended up performing an un-install of the Toshiba Power Saver utility and then re-installing it. I have also changed my habits as well in that I no longer use hibernation, I use standby instead and that has worked really well for me.

I've had problems like this before, but it just disappeared. I have a feeling it is probably program related: some program of yours installed itself into memory and doesn't play nicely with standby and such. I'd probably suggest a painful rebuild first to see what's up.

The only problem I've had with standby and hibernation is that my wireless networking will not work after the system wakes... I can disconnect it and get it to reconnect, but the internet won't work, and it can't be fixed except by rebooting the machine.

Here is the update after calling Toshiba technical support twice today.
It seems that they had a lot of reports of such problems. The two guys I conversed with unanimously requested me to uninstall the Toshiba Power Saver.
I uninstalled the Toshiba power saver.
Advised by them, I also began getting rid of those small utilities/background processes.
I am a little conservative: maybe later I will be in need of those small Toshiba utilites. So I didnot uninstall them. I just use "msconfig" to prevent them from loading at system startup.
Here is the list of utilities/processes I got rid off the startup list:
1. Toshiba ConfigFree;
2. BlueTooth Manager;
3. Toshiba Zooming Utility;
4. Toshiba Modem on Hold;
5. Toshiba Mobile Extension;
6. Toshiba Acceleration Manager;
I hope the system look a little better; I am continuing trying. The headache with problems with standby/hibernation is that they are not recreatable. They occur at completely random times. So I have to continue trying and see if it does improves.
I also want to ask what does the following do:
(In msconfig startup tab list:)
TFNF5
thpsrv /logon
tfswctrl
TskrMain
AGRSMMSG
pinger
toscdspd
ramasst
Some of them look very suspicious...
----------------------------------
One more thing, I noticed that if there is motion combined with "wake-up" from standby, the system will always mysteriously shutdown right after waking-up.
For example, if I hastely open the lid, it will always shutdown after waking-up; but if I carefully and slowly open the lid, with out any motion, the chance of shuting down will be lower.
I guessed this was due to the HDD protection. I turned the HDD protection off; but it did not improve. Mysterious shuting down still occurs. So I'd better put HDD protection back to on.
So now I still don't have clue why such abnormality occurs. I will continue trying..
I will keep you updated...

This problem is similar to 1 out of the 3 problems that are annoying me. But shuting down index service is definitely good. I have already shut it down for performance concerns. That's a nice double-check though.

losemind,
Sorry to hear about your troubles. Also perplexed by some of the things Toshiba support asked you to remove and some they did not. Here are some issues I've seen relating to your problem.
1. Remove the pinger app. It is supposed to ping Toshiba's support site for software updates. It doesn't do so effectively and has caused hibernate/shut down problems with others before.
2. How much memory are you running? There is a bug that has been chronicled here if you have 1.5.
In this list:
1. Toshiba ConfigFree;
2. BlueTooth Manager;
3. Toshiba Zooming Utility;
4. Toshiba Modem on Hold;
5. Toshiba Mobile Extension;
6. Toshiba Acceleration Manager;
I don't think you'll suffer without the above unless you need bluetooth, although the zooming utility can come in handy. I can't imagine why that would cause the problem.
In this list:
thpsrv /logon: I can't find any info on this.
tfswctrl: process for HP's packet writing software which burns data to CD's using Microsoft Windows explorer.
TskrMain: is related to the Toshiba Acceleration utility
AGRSMMSG: is a part of the modem system.
pinger: Kill it.
toscdspd: associated with Toshiba cd/dvd drivers.
ramasst: process that disables windows cd burning so you can burn dvds.
Hope some of this helps.

Hi Wcrocker and all,
Thanks a lot for your information. I will digest your info carefully and delete these processes tomorrow.
For now, I want to update you about my latest findings.
This time I standby it, and then resume carefully, I slowly and carefully open the lid without any motion to the computer itself.
It did not shut down after waking up: but still something abnormal happened:
The system obviously tried to shutdown, but a service named "zxxxsrv"(I don't recall what are xxx three letters) prevent it to shutdown.
The system is waiting for this process to end, but eventually it did not end, so the system after waiting for a while asked me "end it" or "cancel".
I definitely did not want it to shutdown, so I click "cancel". The system did not die and did not shutdown. That's good.
But after a while, the fan begins to crank. And when I really want to hibernate or shutdown( I want to go sleep now), it did not allow me to do so.
The whole system hang after I hit hibernation. Even the task manager cannot be brought up by "ctrl-alt-delete", everything is on, yet it just hang. I have to press the power button for more than 6 seconds to let it down.
Really bad. Tomorrow I will try to kill more processes and startups...
Many people suggested to do a clean install of Windows Tablet PC.
I am considering that, but still have questions though:
1. Where to find MSND Tablet PC XP?
2. Where to find OneNote after this reinstall of Tablet PC XP;
3. Which Toshiba drivers/utilities are definitely a must? I can imagine the chaos of installing drivers/utilities after a complete reinstall of Tablet PC XP... Any experiences and check-list?
What a ridiculous productivity tool!

This is Windows, man...
Had these problems on my Compaq, on my Fujitsu and now on my M200...
I don't know, but I'm sometimes having the same issues, sometimes not and recently Windows would not respond to Standby or Hibernate commands at all... after reboot (magic solution) works again....
I heard from my mate who's using both WinXP on a PC and OSX Tiger on a Mac that in the latter case standby/hibernate always works and this is what he loves about Mac...
I rely as much as you do on these two options, so yes, it annoys me a lot...
Apple, give us a Tablet Mac please! I just wanna know if it indeed is better! The Pen input is the only thing that makes me stay with PC, TabletPC :-)
And no, I will not switch to Mac if they can't provide a Pen input.
Hi there,

Today I've played with those processes.
First I delete processes one by one... but the problem is persistent: I still got immediate shutdown after resuming from stand-by...
I got impatient: I disable all non-MS services and all startups in "msconfig" and then reboot. To my amazement, the pen still worked and I can still browse web using IE or firefox. I believer ONENOTE can still be used. Ctrl+Alt+Del shows that the number of processes is now 23.
I am amazed by how low my requirement is: with 23 processes, I still have pen and I still can use OneNote.
But to my angryness I still got the same problem: after resuming from standby, I got immediate shutdown.
And this problem now occurs 100% of time. No matter how carefully I open the lid, no matter how slow I lift the lid, it always goes to immediate shutdown.
This looks like a hardware problem now. Or it is a XP problem.
What can I do now?
I got completely hopeless.

Now it became even wierd,
today when got several unwanted shutdown after resuming from standby,
I almost desperately decided I definitely need to find a clean Windows XP Tablet edition, and do a clean reinstallation,
magic happened!
Unwanted shutdown does not happen any more!@ (although I finally turn back on all the services and startups)...
3 out of 3 trials give all successful resumes.
But that's not the end: just when I want to claim a mysterious triumph, the 4th time I resume from standby, the system hangs, fan does not run, programs do not work, wireless LAN does not resume connection, etc. The system just hang.
So now again I am in desperate mode!

sorry to hear about your troubles cause that really sucks! I've experienced some of the same standby/hibernate problems you experienced including when waking from standby the left mouse becomes right mouse and the right mouse does not work at all. This left/right mouse problem was in every toshiba tecra i've owned over the last 9 years. logging off fixes the problem sporadically, but 60% i have to reboot. what a pain in the @ss. i've found its best to close every app before standby. but yours sure does sound like a hardware issue... are you installing something specifically after your os reinstall that could be causing the conflict - or does it happen on an os-only install?

have you tried the search function of the forum? this question has been asked and talked about many times in the past. There are may threads that walk you step by step thru the process. Nobody is going to answer your question directly because it is not legal to share the installs or post the file for you. Search for "clean install" or something like that in the forum. If you want the XP tablet install cd's, try google and do some research, they are really not that hard to come by if you just try and look for them.

losemind,
I'm sorry your troubles continue especially after what must have seemed like a huge relief when the system seemed to be functioning correctly.
Some things to consider:
1. Removing processes and apps can be done but it can contribute to problems as well.
2. This is not scientific and certainly there is no documented answer that 100% verifies this, but my experiences and the experiences I've read here point to some background program not shutting down correctly preventing the suspend/hiberante process. If you are not running 1.5G of memory (that's a separate and more easily documented bug), I'd guess that is it.
3. Since Toshiba seems clueless on this (just like the rest of us) I would highly recommend that you do a clean install using the RECOVERY disk(s) if possible. Run the system without installing anything else and see if the problem is repeatable with a clean recovery. If it is repeatable, call Toshiba, demand an escalation up the ladder of support and work from there.
That sounds painful as I write it and I'm sure it will be. But at this point, I think that may be your best option. Troubleshooting something like this can be painful. But if you can restore your system and get it working it will be worth it in the end.

Hi Wcrocker and all,
Thanks a lot for your help! I called Toshiba twice today and after lengthy conversion with several guys and repeat all my stories with several guys there,... they advised me to do a reinstallation by pressing 0 firm at system startup.
Having no other choice, I did it: the reinstallation itself was only 20 minutes.
But other tasks occupies a large bulk of time:
1. Backup data to other disk and restore them back;
2. Again removing all those junkwares, repeating what I've already done in the first a few days when I am having the tablet PC;
3. Get rid of AOL: this junk needs special effort;
4. Reinstall Office from my school;
5. Reinstall Acrobat Pro 7.0 from my lab;
6. Reinstall my scanner drivers;
7. Reinstall several little softwares which I need;
8. Customize my system and tweak for performance;
9. Update Windows and Office 2003 and Acrobat 7.0.4, etc.
10. Most importantly, I am open and closing my lids everytime I install a new software and testing the system to see if it works.
11. I learned a lesson that we should minimize our change to the system to avoid any future troubles. So this time I am not going to remove those small utilities such as bluetooth, configureFree, etc. I will try to bear with them.
The reinstallation of the recovery CD stuff only took 20 minutes; but now 4 hours passed and I am still doing the items on the above list(half way done...)
So far so good. The lid opens and closes OK with no auto-shutdown(as I reported previously, this is the most trouble I've got)...
I report all these hassles just as to record down how much trouble can a productivity tool causes. When human-being created computers, many future-tellers predict that many people will lose their jobs because the automation resulted from using computer; ironically, computers do create job opportunies and in fact waste our time.

ah, thanks for clearing that up. apparently its an operator-error problem with more than 1gb ram... microsoft clearly states on their k.b. that this is only a problem "under high-stress conditions" such as running multiple, um, what do you call them, oh yeah, WINDOWS!
ironically, running windows, and a few other processes, requires a lot of ram.

So again, 1.5GB RAM might randomly generate problems, but apprently not everybody gets into the same trouble...
I have finished all my restoration today and created two restore points...
Now the standby/resume worked OK; but sometimes I noticed the resume will hang the system; I noticed that is when the wireless connection abnormality after resuming from standby.
After resuming from standby, sometimes the wireless connection could not be found and the system just freezes...
I removed the Toshiba ConfigureFree and used Intel Proset to manage wirelss, and I also unload many services.
I am going to see if the system-hang-after-resume problem continues...

Are you running Skype by any chance? I remember a little while back people were complaining that Skype would cause their systems to freeze up resuming from hibernation.
losemind
09-14-2005, 05:42 PM
That's a great reminder! Previously I did install Skype...
But after this newly reinstall of the recovery CD, I haven't run Skype yet... so there is no Skype on this new system!
------------------
Now the problem comes back!
After successfully resume from standby several times, I got a mysterious shutdown immediately after resuming...
So my experiments with standby+resuming goes like this:
SSSSFRSSSSSFRSSSFR
where S denotes success; F denotes mysterious shutdown after resuming; R denotes I have to boot again ...
I did not see hang-up-after-resuming today...
Tomorrow I am going to try two things:
1) shutdown WIFI before standby;
2) uninstall Toshiba PowerSaver;
If these still fail I should reinstall Nividia drivers...
After reinstall the whole OS using recovery CD, I have not uninstall Toshiba PowerSaver yet, because I am thinking that someday I may need it to fine tune the battery time. But now it seems that I have to...
losemind
09-15-2005, 06:00 PM
OK! I think I found the problem: (possibly :=)
After the system run a while, after I standby-resume several times, the battery got fully charged.
After the battery got fully charged, but while the AC adaptor is still connected, and the system is in standby mode, all the AC power goes to the heat on the battery part.
When I resume it in this moment, the system got over heated so it automatically shutdown after resuming from standby...
I guess I should disconnect the AC power when putting it into Standby or hibernation mode!
I will test further tomorrow!
By the way, I have uninstalled the Toshiba PowerSaver ...
If the above hypothesis works, I will reinstall the Toshiba PowerSaver back...
What's the use of Toshiba PowerSAver? Maybe we need it for fine-tuning power levels?

Hiya
You seem to have been having a few problems!
A couple of answers:
While you have been able to use the Restore CD, you have probably found that that restores it with all the extra stuff ... When I needed to restore, I'd not got the Toshiba External drive, so we had to follow the instructions in http://www.tabletpcbuzz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=21160
While that applies to the M200, I'd have thought that it will also work with other versions.
As to the extra software, I have to say that I've always disabled a lot of extra things that OEMs like to have running at start up (also, things like QuickTime & Real, who all seem to think that they should run all the time!) Generally I've found that the thing works fine without them.
As to the last thing that you asked about, the Powersaver, I've not bothered with that - I've found that the Windows ones are fine for me. However, I don't actively put it in Hibernate ... I've just got it so that if I don't use it for a while, it goes automatically to standby or whatever.

Thank you Emmadw for your great info... I wish I had seen this thread earlier...
After stumbling through all 7 pages, I summarize the methods for clean installation of XP Tablet 2005 Edition as following three:
1. Provided by Nigel; Need to copy a bunch of files;
2. Provided by MSBob: download XP SP2 and see the following article:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/deploy/sitpcdep.mspx
3. Provided by Trevelyan: download XP Media Center Edition, and change a few things, and burn CD then install
Which method is the easiest one for a computer dummy?
By the way, I am also wondering does this installation of a fresh XP Tablet 2005 erase the hidden Toshiba recovery partition? For safety reason, I don't want erase the Toshiba factory recovery partition, for worrying about I might screw up something during installtion of fresh XP Tablet PC 2005.
Also, does this installation of new OS voids 3-year Service Warranty?
-------------------------
Also, does Toshiba PowerSaver helps fine-tune power saving levels so I can maximize the batter hours as long as possible in a classroom lecture recording settings? Thanksa lot

I have some additional (personal) observations to add to this topic. I am experiencing the same "standby" problem since a while on my M4 - 2 GB of memory.
In the meantime, I have tried a number of things:
a) Reinstall from scratch - only partly helped.
b) Testing different video drivers.
c) Shutting down services / stopping programs before standby call.
Overall - none of the above things helped. The problem appeared and disappeared somehow randomly. If the situation is there it even appears when sending the system to standby before login.
Finally I somehow found out that this problem appears / disappears after applying changes to the installed software (new program installed / installed program removed - even service pack installation). After any change I now run a small package install routine and so far, I'm cured.
Overall, I would really like to understand what really the cause for this is. Suggestions highly appreciated.
Regards,
V.
Hi,
The reasons for bad standby or wake up that I have observed are often relaten with network issues.
Many hardware have the "wake on lan" feature wich prevents standby.
As I use my tablet with no wireless and no lan whatsoever
and never had any problems to standby or resume
Maybe it is a clue to consider..
Good luck.

The problem I was having on standby/hibernate with the GUI turned out to be related to my mouse driver. I use a Kensington 11-button trackball (for 9+ yrs now) that the Toshibas have never liked. I (finally) remembered that Toshiba support once told me to uninstall the trackball software and let the Toshiba mouse driver drive the trackball. Viola! No more problems on standby/hibernate (though I lose my mind on the loss of 9 buttons). So the moral I guess would be that perhaps input (output too?, or other) drivers may affect the computer's ability to perform its regular duties, and that perhaps its time to put down the mouse and pick up the pen.

I think this is a general XP problem. Check Microsoft's site, there may be information on standby or hibernate problems (I vaguely recall something along these lines).
So far I've had no trouble getting out of hibernate. Mine goes into hibernation if I close the lid, wakes up when I open it. I expect that just like XP Pro on a desktop machine it is going to occasionally refuse to properly boot after hibernating.
It goes into standby on its own to save battery power, but so far has never failed to wake up.

I can sort of relate to this....I have a 17" mac powerbook (as a limited use puter) and I'm very used to just closing the lid and opening it back up when I'm ready to use it again and everything is the way I left it. Sometimes I don't come back & open it for days but it's all exactly the same...battery level, all browser windows,,everything.
I rarely turn it off unless I really know I won't be using it for awhile.
I guess I got spoiled with that...then I get my tablet pc and mess around, go to close lid or it goes to sleep and I can't get it back on. I hear that it's on...but screen just won't go back on...I'm like hmmmmmm??
I don't wanna send it back though...I just want it to work the way that I want it too!!! :P

I use Macs (12" Al PB 1.5 GHz, 15" Al PB 1.25 GHz, 12" iBook 1.33 GHz, 15" Ti PB 550 MHz) running OS X Tiger 10.4.4. I am always impressed with Apple's sleep mode as it sleeps and wakes up in a few seconds (and it does so very gracefully). Compared to Mac's swift sleep/wake up operations, Windows XP's standby/hibernate is very cranky and unpredictable. I don't active hibernate function with my Tablet PC as I heard some issues with hibernation. The only reason I had to go with Windows XP Tablet Edition equipped Tablet PC is Apples does not make the tablet Mac (I needed the pen-eabled PC to streamline my daily work flow and improve efficiency).

Hello all. I used to have an Acer C111 Tablet before it blew up. Something about the devices I put into the USB ports must have strained the surface-mount components. Eventually a few resistors on the mobo blew themselves.. of course, when the laptop went out of warranty. :P Anyway. For those who have been having these standby/hibernate problems.. I want to know something. I can't say this will be true for hibernation. But for standby, yes. Do your laptops get hot at all? Your standby problems are very likely due to heat.. when you standby the system doesn't actually shut off. So it is generating a small amount of heat. And all laptops usually have functions to shut themselves down, or otherwise throw fits if they are too hot! Now, as for hibernate. Hibernation is a mysterious beast, yes. But the -process- is actually very simple to understand! All Hibernation does is store a copy of what was in system memory, what the processor had in it's stack, etc.. into a file on your hard drive, flag the OS that such was done, and then shut down. Upon next re-boot, the system sees that flag, goes to find the file on the hard drive, and loads it into memory and the stack. Once that's done, it just lets the computer 'state' it has built run. Boom, your back in windows. Now.. you all know of memory leaks, right? Very common in windows. So what happens when an active memory leak gets added to this memory image file? Upon next boot, your memory is going to have an active leak running. When you hibernate again, your adding the now larger leak to the next file, and so on. See, hibernation has very little to do with hardware. If your having problems hibernating, you may want to poke at the programs you have running. It might also be a good idea to run a memory cleaner before hibernating. A program designed to sniff out bits of code linked to no active programs. Leaks, bascially, and undo them from memory. Also, consider saving off work you might have open when you do hibernate, before doing so. That way, even if hibernate fails, you don't lose any actual work. You just have to re-load it into the respective program(s) once you've rebooted. Hope these suggestions help!

A memory leak should not influence the hibernation. The file created is always exactly the same size.
If your machine uses a Pentium M processor there should be effectively no heat when in standby. The power usage is so low it should stay cool even in a padded bag.
Microsoft broke something on XP. Hibernate works flawlessly on Windows 2000, whereas it is erratically flaky on XP.

This behaviour looks like hardware problems. I once had a laptop which had problems and also sometimes would not turn on the fan. Given that inside the laptop was a P4 2,6 GHz processor (which generally are not so comfortable without a fan), it was burned 3 times. When a processor is overheated, it simply stops working and the whole system freezes. Pressing the powerbutton is the only way out, and you should do it fast, before the processor burns out.
It's not normal that in standby mode, the AC adaptor is responsible for overheating the battery.

If you are having Hibernate issues, you should check the Microsoft Knowledge Base issue 909095 to see if it is applicable to you. Note: if you are in suspend/sleep mode and you hit the timeout when it is supposed to hibernate, you might end up with the same result.

The computer occasionally does not hibernate and you receive an "Insufficient System Resources Exist to Complete the API" error message in Windows XP with Service Pack 2, in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, or in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
Well... I do experience that kind of problems, but _only_ if in Toshiba HWSetup, "Button Setting" tab the "Standby" switch is in "Fast" position.
When it's in "normal" position - everything is just fine.
Do check it. It may help.
