I believe you just need a second batery like one that came with it.

Looking at my battery, and looking at the DVD drive, I don't think the same battery fits in the bay. Has anyone tried?

I'll have to try mine... I think it's ridiculous that Gateway doesn't mention how this is supposed to work in any of the manuals. Maybe this second battery thing is just myth! However, I think I remember seeing a battery connecter inside my "modular bay" once.

There is no secondary battery from GW that will fit in the cd/dvd drive bay. The main battery will not fit there, and why should the manual go into detail about scenarios of what will NOT work?

GW originally was going to develop a modular bay battery, but dropped this work because it was thought there would be little interest. They may have changed their thinking about that since, because the new model convertible has so many battery options.

To prevent confusion like mine and many others'... This belief that a second battery can be installed is widespread. I don't know this for sure, but I suspect Gateway might have started the rumor before releasing the computer. Since the bay is set up for a battery, they should tell you the options you have. In this case they should mention, not necessarily go into detail, that there is no battery available (at least at the time the manual was written).

Making the current M275 battery fit in the bay would have been the most logical design. Why complicate things and increase manufacturing costs by requiring a different size battery? The size and shap of the bay and the main battery are so similar, it seems logical to me.

ok guys it would take a second smaller battery that it would seem that gateway naver made but they make the laptop so it could take one. The this is they made it sound like they made one for it and that is one of the reasons i got this. so that sucked lol

I don't know about the M275, but my old Inspiron 9100 with the Fixed CD drive on the left side has the option for two batteries on the front face. I can also swap in a floppy / zip drive / module as required.

Whilst there is a discernible difference in the desing of each bay the batteries do fit in well. Of course the drive modules only fit into the right hand bay, not both.

More often than not it is the 2nd battery that lives in it and I used to get a good 5+ hours out of it when I used to use it on the road.

The other good thing with two batteries is that the Dell would draw on one first then the other. As the first one went flat you could swap the 3rd spare in its place without missing a beat.

Unfortunately my new tablet only has room for one batt. :-((
