I have a customer who is a golf pro. He uses an M1400 VA to record customer's lessons. He is complaining of a dramatic slowdown in performance that frequently necessitates a complete shutdown. We haven't had anyone else with a similar experience. the unit will go back to Motion but I'd like to hear if anyone else has had this issue.

He's got 1Gb and a 606b, 7200rpm hard drive.

Perhaps not the same, but after playing those silly MSN games for about 15 minutes, the cursor action slows considerably. I've never felt it hotter. Though I usually just let it sleep for 5 minutes and then get back to work. 1400, 1 gig, standard hard drive. 5800?

If I run a processor-heavy app, like a game or video processing app, the unit gets real hot and I see significant slowing of the system, even lock-ups. Putting it in front of a fan or air conditioner fixes the problem immediately.

It is reasonable to assume that not only heat generated BY the computer will slow it, but also heat from the surrounding area. Heat is heat.

John,

As I'm sure you know the operating temp range is Operation: +5 °C to +35 °C
The questions I have are:

Environment? How hot is it?
Is the unit in a case of some sort?
I've had a very similar situation while traveling. I placed my M1400 in my travel bag and with I-tunes running for about an hour I noticed a serious degradation in the sound quality. I took my TPC out of the bag and it was hot real hot! I was told that the ULV chipset was working properly basically the thermal sensors sensed the heat and slowed the processor down.

It must have been a really good day to play golf. One m1400VA out of the many 1400VA's lockup because of heat is rare but nevertheless scorekeeping golf is too important to have this incident happen. :-)

I stopped using the portfolio case for this reason. Any intense app would work well for about 45 minutes and then get very buggy. I'd pop my 1400 out and it would be scorching (and the portfolio would smell like roasted plasticizer). I just use the tablet bare now and don't have any problems.

I use the tablet for code development, running on AC, inside the portfolio, for long hours at a time, so it gets pretty hot.

Someone on this forum advised to put aluminum foil between the tablet and the portfolio to reduce heat.. Tried it and it seem to help, then I turned the screen brightness down about two notches from the rightmost. With these two changes, the machine is a lot cooler. I can put it on my lap even after hours of use.

Dont know if this will help on the golf course though. I just picked up golfing.. How would you use a tablet to help your game?

Yikes, I wouldn't do that. The foil would act like a heat SHIELD not a heat sink, if the foil were between the hot tablet and the portfolio. It would reflect the heat BACK IN, if anything.

Strange!

Well depends if you put the shiny side down or up!;)

This happens to me as well. I sometimes have my tablet on my console in my truck and when I come back to the truck, it shuts down. It does this even though it is plugged into an inverter in the cig lighter and set NOT to go into standby.

Highly recommend a laptop cooling unit. My favorite, the CompUSA Executive Notebook cooler. Also like the Targus ChillPad.

I've noticed slowing and erratic behavior during the recent mini- heatwave here in VT. 90-95 degrees. I got my 1400 VA the beginning of this year and it had been running fine outdoors until then. Both battery and a/c powered. Made using Dragon NS v8 difficult outdoors. Disappointing to say the least.

Is it really USB powered? I'm gonna need another hub for all the USB stuff.

Toms Hardware did a review on a few of these things a while back.

They reveiwed the units based on how well they cooled, affect on battery life, noise, and features. One of the brands, Vantec, had an integrated USB hub in the device so you actually gained ports by using it.
