Help. I've been using Speech Recognition on and off ffor the last couple months on my TC1000. Yesterday when I went to turn it on it didn't work. When I clicked on Dictation (or Command) on the Input Panel the status area said "Starting Speech", but never went into Listening mode.

When I go to the Speech Control Panel app, I get the following error message:

"The requested task cannot be carried out because the necessary engine could not be created. Please select a different engine and/or audio device."

Well, I tried the 5.0 engine that came with Office XP and got the same error. I only have one audio device. After this error message the Properties dialog is displayed but any attempts to change Speech settings produce a similar error message.

I could find anything in the Microsoft Knowledgebase, and Compaq tech support wasn't able to help (although they are looking into it). They had me run a Windows File Protection check to verify that there were no missing or corrupted files. That came back clean.

I even tried reregistering the SAPI and Recognition Engine DLLs but nothing has worked.

I have the same problem after I accidentally installed the voice recongnition from Office XP. Can you tell how to do Windows file protection check please?

From a command prompt "sfc /scannow"

To solve the problem, I used regedit to remove the entire speech key for my user account.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\SPEECH

Then restart and retrain the speech engine.

Hope that helps.

Thanks. Following your steps I was able to retrain the program. I could activate command recognition but not dictation (when I click the "dictation" icon, it either says "not listening" or "listening" but no response to voice).

Thanks for all your help!

once the key has been removed or renamed, the Speech Bar on the Input Panel should have a button to "Start" speech recognition. Simply click this and begin the retraining process.

Thanks! I had the same problem, and removing the key seemed to work.

Too bad neither Toshiba nor Microsoft had a clue about this message...
