How long would you keep your tablet for? And, what would you do when the next generation comes out(better but not so good that you would rush out to get it)??
I'm just wondering if you guys just go with the new technology flow, or you really love your TPC and wouldn't care if any better one comes out..

Well, I got the Acer, and while it's been nice, I would gladly part ways with it if a really sturdy convertable were made available with a [u]glass</u> screen and a really tough magnesium alloy shell. A shock mounted hard disk would also be a big plus. My Acer already has one dead key, and the hard drive doesn't seem to be very healthy, it doesn't always get detected by the BIOS at power up, and often vibrates badly while making a squalling sort of noise. It doesn't look to me like anything much better in the durability department is coming out anytime soon though, so I'll probably fix this one up and keep it for another year at least. Fortunately, I don't need, or even have much opportunity right now, to carry this thing all over creation, so I might not break it too bad.;)

Since I use the Acer for note-taking and other relatively light tasks (i have a desktop machine I use for games and big writing tasks, I expect to keep my Tablet PC until there's a real need to replace it.

I'm hoping to keep my acer atleast half of the way through college then replace it with a better model. Seeing as I'm a senior in high school right now, its got about 2-3 good years left in it. That is if the latch doesn't break 10 more times ;)

I'd consider a Tablet, like a PDA, to have a much longer life than a Desktop or even laptop, simply because it's so versatile and the applications one uses on it don't usually necessitate a lot of extra horsepower. Also, the extra expensive to have such a versatile piece of hardware is prohibitive of continual upgrades. However, if something new and big came out, I'd expect people to upgrade, especially at this stage in the game in which the hardware is still coming into it's own.

Now that I've had a taste of tablet computing, I believe I will always have "a" tablet. Now, as to how long I will have my TC1000? That I can't tell you. I'm more than satisfied with it right now. But, knowing me, toy fever will get the better of me in another year or two and I'll upgrade to the newest and hippest tablet at the time. We'll see.

I will keep my Motion until (1) it dies or (2) a lighter, faster, longer battery-life, 12 inch screen model becomes commercially available. I figure 18 mos to 2 years.

I am very happy with my TC1000, but as a person who make his living with computers, I tend to step out a little early on new equipment. I will probably use this unit for a year, then move on to a G2 device.

I would KILL for a tablet with the same aluminum alloy used in Powerbook.

*Homer Simpson voice* Mmmmmm aluminum...
Since I've been waiting for Gen2 of the tablet to make its appearance I've been floundering between a Powerbook and a Tablet. I wouldn't KILL for an Apple tablet....I would go on a cross country killing spree for one. ;)

I think a tablet apple will probably come out in the next few years. Since it's such a boom, apple won't lose the opportunity.
u know, the interesting thing is... I wanna get a tablet because I'm having so much troble with the compatability with my ibook... like verizon won't support OSX, I can't install VB that my college's library hands out for free, etc.. :-(

I have a motion, and I agree- until a 12" tablet with either a 1) faster processor or 2) a lighter frame comes out, I will keep it. It's fast enough for my uses, and I've been very satisfied with it.

Virtual PC 6 is supposedly very snappy these days. My girlfriend just ordered a new, fully loaded 12" Powerbook, so I will definitely be trying it for the few Windows-only apps she needs.

I will continue to buy every 3 to 4 mos, or a new release, whichever comes first.
I'm also anticipating IBM's new MCC technology. Regardless, the direction for me is smaller, lighter and faster-no not a PDA/or super PDA -something about the size of my Newton MP2K.

I plan to have mine about 2 years, possibly 3 if the system still provides acceptable power and speed to run the software I will need at that time. Since systems and software are constantly being upgraded, it seems 3-4 years for business applications is about as long as you can go without major sacrifice of productivity. And mine's mainly a work investment. The toy part is just a bonus! [8D] I love the form factor of the Compaq, the sleek design, the smooth glass screen, the weight of the pen, and the convenience of the pen garage. Other than adding a built in CD Rom/DVD (I know this isn't on everyone's improvement list, but I'd love it)it's difficult to imagine improvements that would entice me to buy before 2 years.

I'm a big believer in "trickle down" computing after 18-24 months I will sell my tablet to my father or brother and buy the latest greatest.
Although I might incrementally upgrade when and if the following become available:
-a pin for pin processor speed upgrade(would have to be done in a shop),not likely given Transmeta's road map - maybe just a service release that pre morphs all of your software so the lag goes away,
-a Compact Flash or PC-CARD with Bluetooth GPS and GPRS,
-a better battery (longer life/lighter),
-a bigger hard drive with a higher cache that uses less power and weighs less,
-802.11a/b/g Mini-pci card(someone must be designing it right now.
In which case my Dad will have to wait 3 yews or more to get my Tablet

The one interesting thing about the Tablet is that for all intents and purposes this the the first gen of tablet that may very well take off. Unlike previous incarnations *Cough*Pen*cough*Computing*cough* I group the tablet PC in with the Pocket PC. Look at how fast the models are being pumped out by OEM's there. Once the Tablet PC REALLY starts flying off the shelf’s (Sorry guys but it hasn't started yet.) You can be we are going to see some fast and furious models being flung into the market. What is really going to make the game even more interesting is the eventual entrance by the _MASTER_. Come on you all know who I'm talking about. The big o' D themselves. Once Dell breaks into the market you are going to see some heavy competition. Doth in trying to under cut its competition *coughs*Axim*coughs* and with advanced designs such the new iPaq’s with integrated fold out keyboards.
My point? Mainly that we haven’t seen more then a trickle of devices yet. When they come you are going to have to figure out where to shove that hard earned cash because you can bet the variety is going to be insane.
I don’t know about you guys but I can’t afford to upgrade my mobile computer once every 6 months. So my first tablet is going to have to last me at least 1 to 1.5 years. That is my usual turn around time between devices. This is the reason I was waiting for gen 2 of the tablet. I’m hoping for enough refinement that I will be able to hold off for a while.

I'm not very surprised for the rich market innovators who would switch to a better system with a heart beat here, but I'm quite surprised that there are those who would keep theirs for several years.
Like Jonathan, I can't afford to switch every year or so, and that's why I'm holding my breath(hopefully not too long) for the 2nd G.. Though I don't think that G2 would be much different than G1, at least they should be able to figure out all the bugs and get improve speed and battery.
The big boom will probably come in G3 when people start to realize the capabilities of Tablets, and then we would start calling tablets.... well.... tablets, and computer no longer...
would love to see the light ;)

Well, I actually do see the merger between the Cell phone, PDA and the Tablet happening when they get fuel cell batteries, thinner, lighter LCD's, digitizers, etc. That would definitely change my buying pattern. I'd love to have one device that had all that in it.....
