Hey guys, I'm thinking of getting a new tablet and need some suggestions [borg]

Well, mostly I'll be using Word, Visual Basic, going online, and some photoshop. Since, graphics stuff is only one of my hobbies, I figure one with labtop is a way to go.

So far Toshiba and Compaq interest me the most.
These I figure out from my researches:

Toshiba:
advantages:
-powerful
-big screen
-not a lot of issues

disadvantages:
-heavy
-may be too big to carry around one handed
-no docking
-expensive

Compaq:
advantages:
-mobile keyboards
-small
-better screen

disadvantages:
-small keyboards
-slow

I like small labtops, but the problem is that I don't think I'll be using the slate version too much(though that idea might change), since mostly I use only for online purpose, typing articles, and play games... So, please fire me comments on toshiba's size and screen, and compaq's keyboard.. Also, if I skipped over some other awesome brands you can beat me up and scrape off my skins for ignorance [unworthy]

Lastly, my friends have been telling me to wait for the 2nd generation.. so are people having problems with their 1st generation? And when do you guys think the 2nd generation will come out?(I really wish they have internal CD-drive)

Thanks a lot :)

Since you are into graphics stuff and games, the Toshiba is your only choice. The Toshiba has a pressure sensitive pen for graphics(Compaq doesn't have this) and the processor is faster for games.

wow... I didn't know compaq doesn't have pressure sensitive screen... that's too bad.

But no one has problem with toshiba's portability, right? I'm so afraid I would drop it -.-'

Well... i don't play games much, but I guess toshiba's power would be useful.

Anyone has news on 2nd generation labtops though?
Especially one with built-in CD-Drive?

However, the Compaq's the only TPC with a decent 3D card. I'd much rather play WarIII with a ~800 MHz and a GeForce2 than with a 1.33 GHz & integrated graphic card.

The pressure sensitivity is a big thing, on the other hand, if you're into graphics a lot. If you're only doing some random PS-ing, you could very well do without pressure.... especially since PS still relies on wacom's drivers, which don't interact well with apps built with native TPC support.

<- is just waiting for HPaq to release their second-gen convertible WITH PRESSURE SENSITIVITY :)

Suggest you check out the forums specific for both the Compaq and Toshiba & make your choice based on that. I love the Compaq, and would have a hard time thinking of buying one without the option of the detachable keyboard. I find the keyboard easy enough to use. About the only keys I have trouble with typing instinctively are the delete, home, end, and occasionally backspace. (I had the same trouble with my daughter's laptop because I am so used to the standard keyboard) Sometimes it's easy to press the mouse key instead of the space bar the way they are spaced. But all the letter & number keys are easy to use.

I haven't missed the pressure sensitive screen, but I am not a graphic artist. However, if you don't have pressure on your current laptop or desktop & can use graphic programs, I see no reason you couldn't continue to do so even without the pressure sensitivity. Check out the threads on the Wacom Drivers used with the pressure sensitive pens, I understand there have been some issues there. (Of course, Compaq had pen issues too, but those seem to have improved immensely in recent weeks, and I have not had any problems personally.)

Compaq service appears to be pretty good. My personal experience with Toshiba service has been lousy. My daughter's laptop has been in for repair numerous times in 2 years, new hard drive, A drive, power supply (twice), battery, and the keys falling off the keyboard. They gave me a really hard time over the keys falling off even though we had the extended warranty. Spent over 2 hours on the phone arguing with them before they would cover it. They had it over two months with the hard drive problem. A lot of time has been spent without the use of the computer due to the frequent repairs.

However, this may not be true in all cases - this is just my personal experience. When I started looking I narrowed it down to Toshiba & Compaq, and am so happy I went with Compaq.

are you asking about next generation laptops or TPCs?

You'll like the Toshiba over the Compaq. The Toshiba is heavier, but it has fewer problems and the performance is superior. Toshiba support is excellent. The Compaq design is widely accepted as the most innovative, but the performance and reliability is questionable - check out both forums.

Toshiba also a shorter battery life and higher heat (consequences of the faster processor)

Well, I was talking about TPC, since the touch screen features(and softwares) really amaze me.

I went to check both forums, and I figured that Compaq has a lot of problems with their new model(wireless and USB disconnects), and I couldn't disagree with Toshiba's potential heat problem..

I also saw Panasonic one that's about to come out.. though 2 inches is wayyyyy too large.

Guess, I'll wait till April or May and see if the new one is going to come out. If not, I might just get Toshiba.. At least I have more probability of not having to mess around with the customer services(hate them)...

winno,

I encourage you to get your hands on a Toshiba or a Compag or both before you give up on them. Don't let a few people with problems with 1.0 products scare you away from a really wonderful thing.

I don't deny that some people have had problems with their tablets, but I know that many people, myself included, haven't. Try to get to a Franklin-Covey store and test drive a TC1000 and to a CompUSA and test drive a Toshiba yourself before you write them off completely.

Just my 2 cents.
