Hey all,
I just found a great way of holding my Tosh on my desk while it is in tablet mode. I had an old Franklin Covey plastic binder holder that I was getting ready to throw away. I then realized that it'd be perfect for my computer. It holds the computer at a good writing angle, you don't have to be directly over the computer to see what's going on, and it has a built-in cutout so the hinge doesn't get in the way. Plus it has storage underneath (I just barely managed to put my Sony DVD player in the right space). There is free airspace between the storage unit and the top surface that allows for routing cables up to the PCMCIA card. Due to the placement of ports on the 3500, you'll have to decide how you want to orient your computer unless you have a longer length of USB cable and don't mind cables here and there. Only bad spot right now is that the lip is high enough that the AC cord ends up holding the computer up. I'll have to see about making a slot just for the AC power cord.
If you're interested, look for the plastic Classic/Compact desktop planner holder. You can find it on their website under binder accessories/nameplate and addons/planner holders. Here is the link:
http://shopping.franklincovey.com/html/ibeCCtpSctDspRte.jsp?section=16253. I'll try to post some pictures later so you can see the setup if anyone is interested. Cheers:D

Alright Shadohart and all,
Here are the pics. You'll see that the Sony DVD player fits in just right with the cable coming up on the right side. I put my floppy on the left side but don't usually since I don't like the USB Cable extensions routing all over place. I like this setup especially being able to flip the screen up for better or close-up viewing. I can write in this mode but the monitor portion doesn't offer much resistance. Part of my initial problem with the tablet holder was that the USB ports and the AC cord plug were below the lip on the bottom part. I fixed this by adding a couple of cork coasters for spacers. This works fine since the rubber tablet boots grip the cork just fine adding for more stability. Let me know if anyone has any questions and I'll be happy to answer. Cheers.:D

Okay, update #2. The desktop holder blocks the fan area enough and the computer starts heating up enough that I decided to do some surgery on the holder. I broke out my Dremel and started by cutting away the left portion of the holder in front of the fan and smoothing out the edges. Since I don't usually use an external monitor or LAN cable I didn't see a need to do anymore cutting, but then thought, "Hey, while I'm at it...Why not?" Just in case anyone out there IS using these devices and is interested if these connections can be made on the tablet holder. Highly proficient Dremel user I am not, but, hey, it works. Here are the pictures of the final design. I went crazy and plugged up every connection I could make to show you what it would look like. Always open to questions or suggestions. Thanks. :D

Dang! NOW you tell me! I hadn't heard of the Fujitsu desk stand before now. It looks very interesting. What's the writing angle like? Having used this holder before with my paper binder, I'm used to this holder's writing angle and it's a very easy transition to writing like this on the Toshiba. Please tell us of your experience with the Fujitsu. Since this was a do-it-yourself project for me, I'd like to see if maybe there is a functional commercial tablet holder already available. Maybe Toshiba ought to think of offering one. Up until now, they probably havn't needed one but digital ink changes all that. I'm writing this in Journal and only wish I'd had this in college for taking notes while studying. So, please let us know. I'm sure some people would be interested. Cheers! :D

Hehe, I haven't talked myself into buying it yet, I don't use my tablet at a desk enough to justify the expence. I do know someone on the forms had it, do a search.

rc1, I have the Fujitsu and the Fuji stand. Believe it or not, I never thought of using the Fuji on the stand for writing on the tablet. I only use the stand at home to hold the tablet while sync-ing to the desktop. At work or downstairs at home, I use the Fuji in the slate mode.

The stand has four preset reclining angles. the fifth most setting is for laying flat/stowing the stand. Here're pictures of the stand at each of the four preset angles. The last picture is the unit on the stand at the most reclined position. In all cases the tablet is about 3 inches off the table and not the most comfortable position for writing.

rc1, I have the Fujitsu and the Fuji stand.

That's exactly what I WANT it for! I have been doing my notes on this Sony Vio R 505- too sweet-- but still had to go to paper for scetches that the professors insist on drawing. Then it's scanning and inserting images. Journal is awsome! I can't wait to get it.

BTW, thanks for the pics. I like the ideas and your custom work is fab.

Thanks for the pics, Twills! Looks like it'll work well for writing on the holder. Plus, it's foldable. Cool! Let us know how it works out.
mcgroarty: Yeah, I don't get out much. My wife is a Toshiba widow, especially now that I have WinDVD Platinum...
TreasonX: My unit was bought here in Japan as an overseas English OS model. I didn't think there was a difference in models but thanks for pointing one out. Cheers.:D

Here, I've been thinking about all the 'net things I could do with a tablet away from home. You know it somehow didn't even occur that you could use the thing for movies?

I've been looking at small models. Maybe I want something with a DVD built-in after all, aiee.

Shado,
Thanks, and hey, I'm sure you'll also enjoy Corel Grafigo for your drawings. Overall, it should make things A LOT easier. Good luck with school and hope you get your Tosh soon. Cheers:D!

I use a budget plastic document holder as stand for my Toshiba 3500. It cost 120 SEK (approx. 15 US $) and works fine. The size is just right and it is adjustable. Though, it can be just a little bit unstable when writing at the top of the screen and I'm a bit concerned about the strength of the Akille's heel - the bit of plastic (circled in red) connecting the plastic plate to the metal base. Anyway, works for me.

I just bought a Franklin Cover Tablet Planner "Chair" which works
great as a stand for the 3500. The "chair" ($29.95) can be found at:

http://shopping.franklincovey.com/html/ibeCCtpItmDspRte.jsp?section=19385&item=7999

or at a local Franklin Covey store (where I bought mine). It has a wood frame and the black part in the picture is actually canvas (so the "chair" is like a canvas lawn chair). I was concerned that it would not be sufficiently supportive, but have been surprised to see how well it works for both writing and viewing. The 3500 sits on the wood frame, not on the canvas -- the width of the chair is identical to the width of the 3500. The 3500 is about 1 inch taller than the chair, so it is a very good fit and uses very little real estate on your desk. Right now I'm using it adjusted to the lowest angle, which I find perfect for writing. The highest angle would probably work well for viewing only.

By the way, the little clips at the bottom of the chair (presumably to hold a planner binder) are not usable with the 3500.
