Hi Guys,

I have noticed something strange while playing around with some of Mark Russinovich's tools: RegMon. This tool monitors all read/write events to the registry.

The tool can be downloaded here for free: http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/regmon.shtml

The problem is as follows. There is a process called: AGRSMMSG.exe which I believe to be part of the modem software of the Agere Systems AC'97 Modem. (I have not installed the latest software update BTW. I first want to analyze the performance impact.) This process accesses the registry tens of times a second!

I have attached the output of the tool. Please can anyone verify this behaviour. The results show up best when there are no other programs running. It's probably also best if you disable the wireless. Too much activity overloads the tool with data and you might not be able to see what I mean. Just start the tool and do nothing. Don't even move the mouse. You will see that this process is polling the registry at an amazing rate.

The quick fix is to kill the AGRSMMSG.exe process. This reduces registry activity to near zero when you leave the tablet alone. You probably won't be able to use the modem then, but then again, who does :D

I am looking in how to stop this process from even starting. More on that later...

[unworthy]PLEASE[unworthy] help me verify this is not on my tablet alone!

Regards

Nick

you are not wrong ... I have upgraded to the new drivers yet the registry access has not calmed down. You can uninstall the modem from the Control Panel -> Phone and Modem Options. There is also an option to disable the modem but I could not get it back unless I uninstalled and then reinstalled.

Has anyone else noticed this? How much of a performance impact does this have?

Thanks, Spencer.

Start -> Run -> "msconfig.exe"

This happens on the Toshiba 3500, too. It appears to be a Lucent application called "Modem On Hold" that intercepts call-waiting when you're online using the dialup modem and allows you to toggle between your data connection to accept an incoming voice call without actually disconnecting.

If this isn't important to you, just remove the LTMOH.EXE entry in the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run section of the Registry.

you can modify every start up routine from every application run to every service activated without opening the registry if you follow my previous post.
