Bill Gates got his NEC Versa LitePad yesterday (check out what he's holding in his hand): http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/images/features/2003/02-24broadband-lg.jpg
We start shipping in the United States and Canada next week. They should start appearing at CDW, Amazon, and PCConnection around March 10.

Oh, good point Robert, I´m going with the Compaq :D
Joke, sorry...
But, hey, you tolerated that Billy got his NEC first?
What ails us?
Shame on you [^]

Bill Gates is friends with NEC's CEO. He flew to Japan and picked his up at the factory. The rest of us have to wait for the slow boat. <sigh>
There's gotta be +some+ advantages to being the richest dude in the world, no? :-)
PS: I still don't have one either. They keep taking it away to show to folks.

Just in time for techies to hold their breath for new Cebit announcements and postpone the purchase. :D

Ahh, yes, the old "wait for better technology" argument.
That's a never ending one. There'll always be something better tomorrow in this industry. At some point you gotta decide when it's "good enough" for you to buy in.
I keep remembering my first hard drive. It was a 5 megabyte (that's megabyte, not gigabyte). Didn't come with a battery. Weighed a ton. Was slow as molasses. Cost $5000. Needed AC power.
Today you can buy a 20GB hard drive, and an entire computer that weighs only 2.2lbs -- all for less than half the price!
Hey, that was only in 1983. Imagine how much better Tablets will be in 20 years!!
Hmmm, that's an idea.
Take the 5k, buy an bond/stock, let it compound interest for twenty years, then buy NEC.

Robert,
Any idea if the product will ever reach Russia at all? Your local distributors have no idea. In the meantime HP promotes their previous generation piece on their local site...

I'm sorry, I don't. I only work for NEC Solutions (America) which markets/sells/distributes the NEC Versa LitePad in the United States and Canada only. I'll try to find out, though.

I can live with a better device coming out a month or two after I get mine. Two weeks would annoy me. :D

I'm pretty tied in with the industry and I don't know of any sub-three-pound device coming out before Q3, 2003.
I know of a bunch of larger units coming out, though.

Sub-three pound is not necessarily the issue (as long as it's not more than 3.5 or so). It's the looks. :D I am just waiting to see whether HP announces a rumored "intermediate-fix" device or not.
Not going to start any rumors and hint at any of the new devices, huh? :-(

That's good news!
CDW said to me that there is a lot of interest!
They also said that they are selling fast - but then they Always say that [:O]

This is the hottest selling product I've seen in my 1 year here at NEC, that's for sure.
CDW is right. It's looking like it'll be very tough to get NEC Tablets -- they are selling like hotcakes. If you've already ordered yours, you'll probably get one, but supplies are looking like they'll dry up very fast. We've already increased our internal orders several times in response to the demand.
I can't wait until you all get one.

I should add: we're increasing our internal orders on a nearly hourly basis and we should be able to keep up, but, it's pretty clear we have a pretty good hit on our hands here, so if you want one, get your orders in as soon as you can. I'll try to keep you all up to date as to who has supplies and who doesn't (and who'll get them when). Oh, and if you're considering a volume purchase please let us know as soon as possible, so we can adjust our supply accordingly.
