just received a demo tc1000; alas the administration password was unknown. Not having a usb cd drive (but plenty of firewire drives-go figure) I found that I could perform a system restore putting the drive in my compaq laptop and booting from the compaq tablet cds. Putting the drive back into the tablet, I get a NTLDR missing error. I tried bootfix, bootcfg mbrfix in XP. The compaq restore disks are pretty useless, there are no command line tools that I know of. Anybody have any ideas? I suppose I can wait until Monday to see if I can get a usb drive at work - but who has the patience?

ok, it seems that the tablet pc does something with the partitioning of the hard drive. when I went to install the software off the tablet's drive, the restore utility gave me an error about the lba not set correctly. from my previous post, you can gather that restoring with the drive in a standard laptop doesn't work. so I bought a usb cd drive (office max - 109 before 30$ rebate (I/O Magic 48x16x48 External CD-RW Drive)) and restored the software. the first time I got that error again about the lba being off. said ok, restored - didn't work, restored again, added the tablet to my airport and I'm finally updating winxp!
sheese, I gotta tell you these things were really thrown out the door. windows doesn't even ask you for a code when you restore. From what I read in the forums, having to go through a restore 2x is normal. I especially liked the fact that you need the keyboard to go through the xp startup process.
I imagine after we get done beta testing (remembrances of going through the entire wince linup) these will be pretty nice machines.
whats the adage? it takes 3 generations before microsoft gets it right?
