Hello everyone. I took the plunge and bought a Toshiba Portege 3500 for my g/f's graduation present. I'm using it now, and it's a good machine.
However, some problems have arrisin. The mouse touchpad doesn't function, nor do the left/right buttons. I'm trying to figure out a better way to remove the pen from the screen holder than ripping it out with my fingernail. And finally, the BIG issue, how can I add words to the text recognizer?
If anyone can answer these questions, I'd be very thankful.
Thanks!

to remove the pen, simply push in at the base of the pen in the tray and the top portion of the pen will pivot outward.

Thats a nice present for someone. As far as the touchpad not working I believe your best bet would be to call toshiba and have them run you through the steps to reinstalling the touch pad drivers. At the very extreme you will have to reinstall windows and after that if it's not working, send it back to toshiba to be repaired. They're really good about this, they send a box out with postage.
and the pen issue, if the previous explanation wasn't clear enough, you will see a circular depression on the pen that is closest to the power on/off button.
hope that helps!

Thanks for the info. The pen popped out, as it should (amazing!). I'll check with Toshiba on the mousepad.
If anyone has any idea about how to add words to the handwriting recognizer, that would be most helpful.
Thanks again!

You can't add words to the hand writing recognizer. It's not a learning system.

That's not really correct. You can add words. Rather than re-invent the wheel, I'll just point you to this thread: http://tabletpcbuzz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1942

Strange - I tried that on my own, and it didn't work. After some testing, I found out why. I tried stressing out the recognizer right away by using a domain name rather than a word. Because the recognizer understood "microsoft.com" I thought "why can't I add a domain?". So, what happened was:
1) the recognizer does not appear to like word.word (i.e. domain.com)
2) it also doesn't like word word
Both situations cause the green carrot menu NOT to display "add to dictionary". The first is a pain to make it understand what I'm conveying correctly, but possible. The second would be nice for phrases, or when it tries to figure out a word and breaks up the word into two words.
But after some tinkering, I can work with what I have now. I was seriously conerned for a little bit! Thanks everyone!
