View Full Version : I've tried Motion Optimized and Max Battery. Ma

I've tried Motion Optimized and Max Battery. Max Battery seems like it should give the longest service, but I haven't seen that much of a difference. The CPU drops the same, but Max Battery seems to have a shorter time to screen off and it drops into hibernation pretty quickly too.

Has anyone done some testing on this?

Forgot to ask: Does anyone know the battery cost difference between the hibernation state and standby state?

What if you're "waking" the machine every 15-30 minutes throught the day? It seems like waking from hibernation is costly to the battery.

Thanks,

My general rule is hibernation if I won't be using the machine for over an hour.

With WiFi off, I notice about 1%-2% per 45 minutes battery use on standby.

Bishop, which power setting do you use?

wi-Fi off increases battery time? So if I'm not using Wi-Fi I should shut it off in the motion control panel?

Someone once said that there is a power setting that even when the tablet is unplugged, it will still run at the max speed. Does anyone know what this setting is?

I think someone said the laptop/portable setting found on the Motion dashboard would not engage speed-step. I never confirmed that it worked, though.

Leaving the wifi off should increase battery time, though there's really no telling how much. It will keep it from looking for a wireless network that doesn't exist.

According the MS, stand by mode is supposed to last a minimum of 72 hours on a full charge. Due to the nature of hibernate, it shouldn't drain the battery at all. Suspend basically powers the system enough for the RAM to store it's information, hibernate dumps the contents of the RAM to disk, so it requires no power.

Having said that, I never use Hibernate.

I didn't use hibernate until I purchased my tablet. I found that suspending the ram to disk took too long, and offered limited use, since it took about as long to restore the ram as it did to cold boot. However, with the tablet this has changed, since hibernate on the tablet seems to be a *lot* more efficient than anything I've seen before.

But it's not the hibernate that uses the power- it is the resume from hibernate. Since it is disk intensive, it uses a lot more power than resume from standby.

I use "Motion Optimized". I have noticed a l2- l5% shorter battery life w/ constant wifi use.

Heh. You wrote that last line, didn't you? I see the I instead of the 1. Try forming your 1's with the extension at the top and the line at the bottom. You'll get better recognition.

wraith:

I always post by handwriting. Doesn't everyone?

I usually form ones as you suggest, but was trying a variant that works for courier but for a sans serif font.

This board should be Ink aware.

I haven't used hibernate at all yet. I just power down when I leave the office. It boots up quickly enough that I haven't been annoyed.

I think I'm just paranoid about the remaining battery, so I power down when I should be using standby or hibernate. I've noticed that if I come back to my desk 5 minutes before I leave for the day, I still plug the tablet up. Gotta get those last couple of minutes of juice!

Actually, I don't ususally post by Ink. Since I'm a developer, usually I have my keyboard plugged in when I'm working. Development IDE's are =not= ink friendly, unfortunately. :-(

My keyboard is just collecting dust.

Heh. Try to write words that don't make sense in the english language. Tabs and spaces and {} are other things that give problems...not to mention everything in lower case...

I still prefer using the keyboard but I'm quite happy with using the pen when mobile. I type at around 100 words per minute. I can't even think that fast. If you see the stuff I write you'll agree.

I prefer using the handwriting in Palm graffiti mode, myself.

Eh hem... back on topic:

I did some power analysis a few weeks back
