I'm in my 3rd year as a Computer Science student. I have a desktop that I can use for tasks requiring lots of computing power, but I want a tablet for mobility.

I need to draw diagrams in my notes for many of my classes, but I need to be able to type when I'm writing code. I think that I would prefer a convertible rather than a slate since I would split my time rather evenly between pen and keyboard.

I think that 12.1" would be a good screen size since I need room for notes and code but can use my desktop for image editing and major coding projects. I don't need a very large hard drive for the same reason. I would only need to keep class notes and documents on the tablet and can transfer large files to my external hard drive.

I've been looking at the HP tx1000z (the price is very attractive), but I want to be sure that I get a rather durable model. I'd like to spend $1200-1500, but might be able to stretch my student budget up to $2000 for very compelling reasons.

A few more things since I can't seem to edit my post.

I'm looking for specific model suggestions with details about why it would fit my needs.

I think that I would rather an active digitizer because I tend to rest my hand on the paper when I'm writing, but it's not too important. I can adjust.

Another factor I need to consider is weight. I need to be able to carry it in my bag comfortably, but I'll almost always have support for it.

I'm flexible in terms of an indoor/outdoor or indoor only screen. I don't spend much time sitting outside, but may deal with bright classrooms.

I don't require a brand new model. In fact, I think that I would prefer to buy used or refurbished before I commit a lot of money on a fancy new tablet so I can determine if I can utilize it well.

The tx1000 hasn't had best reputation. I suggest a very good condition HP1100 or Motion 1300-1400 for very low entry gamble on costs but experiencing still highly regarded tablet landmarks. Some VERY knowledgeable tablet owners of countless models still rank the 1100 as one of if not THE best tablet ever.

I run Vista on my M1300 very well, RAM and fast hard drive matter far more than CPU until most recent offerings.

The Lenovo X61 is top ranked, the HP2710 has strong praise in the +$1500 range. The Dell tablet launches soon. I would either buy classic model for $500 or spend the bank on the very best. You could probably sell a $700 mint 1100 next year for $400 and buy next generation hardware Vista refined better. Some tablets still struggle with driver issues in this transitional period.

How useful is the docking station for the TC1100?

Look for a 10.5" convertible. This will give you better mobility and battery life and allow you to accomplish your stated goals. Not sure what Acer has these days, but I still have my 2002 Acer C110, which keeps on chugging even in the hands of teenage girls!
